Today we’d like to introduce you to Eboney Jones.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Eboney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from college in 2010, which was in the midst of the Great Recession. The only job I could find was calling homeowners in pre-foreclosure for at a major bank. Day in and day out, I spoke with people who were facing extreme financial hardship. One day, I spoke with a lady who told me she was afraid of losing her home because her husband had lost his job. She sobbed as she opened up about having four small children and not having any other resources that could help with their situation. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any options to assist her but that conversation sparked a passion in me to learn more about mortgage, foreclosure, and ways I could help homeowners facing financial hardship. In the past ten years, I have held positions in various areas of the mortgage and real estate industry, which have equipped me with tools to do just that.
Recently I was able to connect with two other dynamic ladies, Kimberly Harris and Courtney Harrington who approached me with the idea of starting a podcast about real estate and thus Real Women Real Estate was born. Each of us brings something different to the table. Kim has the most investing experience and has a few successful house flips under her belt and also does home interiors. Courtney is a former accountant turned real estate agent and investor based out of Silicon Valley. I bring my experience with foreclosure, mortgage funding, and affordable housing to the table. Together, our goal is to create a community for women to build their network and net worth. We bring on industry experts who share their stories and inspire us to strive for greatness.
Covid-19 is shaking up the real estate and mortgage industries. There are a lot of people looking for answers right now about how to keep their homes, whether or not they should buy a home, and if real estate is still a good place to make an investment. Our podcast seeks to be a resource to answer all those questions and more. As a newbie investor, I am grateful to be able to glean information from my co-hosts and guests and hope I am able to add value in exchange.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have definitely been challenges along the way, with self-doubt probably being the largest. I struggled with underestimating myself by thinking I didn’t belong or wasn’t good enough. I have always been a fan of podcasts, but I never thought that I had the skills to start my own. I considered myself just a fan of real estate, but when I met my business partner Kim, she began to show me how my knowledge and experience could be used to build a business and help others.
Real estate investing is not for the faint of heart. It requires tenacity, ingenuity, and persistence. Sometimes you really have to fail forward. I have so many stories of times that I thought I had a good deal and it fell through. Or times I thought I was going to be able to keep someone from foreclosing on their home, but a curveball kept that from happening. Every time I think about quitting, I remember how far I have come and how much I have to offer those who may need my services. Our podcast is also helpful because I get to speak to people who have dealt with their own failures and kept pushing to success.
Please tell us about Real Women Real Estate.
Our brand is Real Women Real Estate. We are three women who are passionate about real estate and believe it is a vehicle to build wealth, preserve communities and promote financial literacy. We chose the name because it’s exactly what we are: Real Women. Although we are Real Estate professionals, we are also mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters. Our goal is to make real estate accessible to everyday, real women. I am most proud that our podcast is conversational and down to earth, yet super impactful and informative. It ‘s like getting a chance to sit with three of your good girlfriends and learning how to change your life. We definitely keep it real and try to ask questions that others may be thinking but just don’t have the chance to ask.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would be more confident about my knowledge and ability to help others sooner. It took me some time to realize that what seemed like random job experiences in the real estate and mortgage industries was actually a gift that I could in turn use to empower others. I would definitely put the pieces together a lot quicker!
