Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Brown.
Ebony, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been sewing for almost four years now and styling for three years. It all started when my grandmother passed away. I told myself that I should follow my dreams and not waste time doing things that I do not love. I have always had an eye for fashion or creating things. One of my biggest inspirations is Pharrell Williams. Watching his growth and development in different lanes of the industry made me want to get into fashion, I did eight years in the U.S. Army and decided the uniform life was not for me. I am an individual and I enjoy being free. I hope that one day my business will be successful and respected at the level of Pharrell, that I too will be able to expand my business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road for me. My biggest struggle has been self-doubt. I was medically diagnosed with anxiety and tended to overthink things a lot. Lately, I have learned to control my anxiety and not let in interfere with my work and I am more grateful for the talent I have been blessed with and the things I have accomplished.
Please tell us about CrèLucent.
CrèLucent is a styling and apparel company based in Dallas, TX, that originally started as custom performance wear for female rappers. I sew, design, sketch and have experience with Adobe suite. I am most proud that I was able to land two female rappers with only one year of experience in sewing. I booked Asian Doll and Maliibu Miitch immediately and that helped me see that I was on the right path. What sets me apart from other companies is that I make all of my garments and design all of my garments. Wholesale is ok but fast fashion is not what I aspire to put into the universe. I want to conserve energy and respect for the environment. It is important that my imagination with my designs come to life.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is fangirling for boybands. People thought I was a dork for fangirling; however, I only took an interest in boybands because I wanted to dress them so badly. I would literally sit around all day thinking of video concepts and outfits for backstreet boys, B2k and B5. I was the camp out in line type… cringe.
