Ebony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ebony Burks, the dynamic force and visionary behind Golden Blk Candle Lounge Drawing from her varied experience as an event planner, teacher, and a graduate student in clinical counseling, Ebony began crafting eco-friendly, luxury candles as a form of therapeutic self-expression.
Amongst the height of the global pandemic, Ebony’s vision for Golden Blk Candle Lounge emerged from her kitchen, initially making her mark at local pop-up shops in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. However, her entrepreneurial spirit yearned for something more. She yearned for a way to create a community.
The inspiration to create a space, to host and bring people together, was born from fond memories of her late grandmother Janette Burks (JB) and her innate gift of hospitality. Her grandmother, a woman who loved people and delighted in providing spaces for them to gather, celebrate, and connect, left an indelible imprint on Ebony’s heart. Her spirit of hospitality and warmth greatly influenced Ebony’s approach to business and community building.
The concept of a ‘Candle Bar’ was sparked. It was a space where people could not only come to purchase exquisite, hand-poured candles but also gather, connect and create.
In December 2021, Ebony secured a studio space downtown Dallas, and officially opened February 2022, Golden Blk Candle Lounge was born – a warm, inviting space that encouraged people to gather, explore their senses, and participate in the unique joy of candle-making.
Today, Golden Blk Candle Lounge stands as a testament to Ebony’s commitment to community and shared experiences, a tribute to her grandmother’s legacy of love, hospitality, and celebration. More than just a business, it’s a space where people can connect, create, and ignite their senses – much like her grandmother’s gatherings once did. As Ebony lights the way with her sustainable, luxury candles, she continues to kindle the spirit of community, creating a space where everyone feels welcome, and every scent tells a story.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has been serendipitous, filled with the ups and downs of the past three years. Last year was particularly challenging, but through every trial, I’ve triumphed. I’m deeply grateful to God for being with me every step of the way, and I give Him all the glory and praise. He’s placed incredible people in my life who support me and my vision for Golden BLK. My heart is overflowing with gratitude.
