Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Turner.
Hi Ebony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Hope, Arkansas, and grew up in Pittsburg, Texas- home of Pilgrim’s Pride and the famous Pittsburg Hotlinks! My parents were educators who instilled in my older brother, Steven, and me the importance of getting a good education I have known since 8th grade that I wanted to be an attorney. The only school I applied to for college was The University of Texas at Austin. While at UT, I was active on campus and in the community. I pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and instantly gained over 100,000 new sisters! I worked as a Senate Messenger and subsequently as a Legislative Intern at the State Capitol. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Minor in Spanish. I went to St. Mary’s University School of Law for my 1L and 2L years. In between 2L and 3L years, I married the love of my life, Allan C. Turner, Jr. I finished law school at The University of Texas School of Law. During my 3rd year and right after, I worked at the Women’s Advocacy Project, on a Domestic Violence Hotline. I then went back to my Legislative roots and worked for the Texas Legislative Council drafting bills for the members of the Texas Legislature. My first child, Anaiah, was born in 2004. In 2006, we made the move to DFW. I applied to District Attorney and Public Defender jobs. The Dallas County Public Defender’s Office hired me and I went to work there in February of 2007, 3 months after the birth of my 2nd daughter, Jael. At the PD’s office, I represented indigent individuals in misdemeanor and felony cases. In 2011, I took a leap of faith and opened up my own private, primarily criminal, law practice, The Law Office of Ebony M. Turner. In March of 2013, my son, Isaiah was born. Just 9 weeks later, he was diagnosed with a heart defect and Trisomy 21-Down Syndrome. In 2015, I began teaching criminal justice as an adjunct professor at Tarrant County College. In March of 2021, I announced and filed to be a candidate for Judge of Tarrant County Criminal Court #6! Also, in March of 2021, I along with one of my best friends, also opened up Kids Karevan, a Rideshare service for kids. I continued to work and campaign and on March 1, 2022, I became the official Democratic nominee for Tarrant County Criminal Court 6! I will continue to work, and serve in the community, and be mom and wife as I strive to be the next Judge of Tarrant County Criminal Court #6!!!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road. I grew up in a small town. I went to the University of Texas at Austin, in which the dorms held more than the population of my whole town! So, it was a change, but I welcomed it and adapted well. I have always had to challenge the notion that I was an affirmative action admission student, instead of priority admission, which I was. Being a Black female attorney also comes with similar challenges, often having to prove you deserve success, recognition, and access.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Law Office of Ebony M. Turner?
I practice primarily criminal law. I have been licensed to practice in federal courts since 2012. I do some wills and estate planning.
What was you like growing up?
I was the student that got written up for talking too much or occasionally talking back! I was always goal-oriented and focused on getting get good grades. I was outgoing and rarely refused a dare.
