Today we’d like to introduce you to Edee Yumm.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my dance journey in October 2016 by auditioning for my friend’s burlesque troupe. I had been to several local burlesque shows but had never even tried to perform. She pushed me to audition for the spot they had open. I almost bailed several times but she wouldn’t let me give up, even helping me with my choreography and costume. The spot was given to another more skilled performer but I didn’t let that stop me. I now had a fire in me that I didn’t want to go out. I started taking dance and flexibility classes at The Dallas School of Burlesque. Learning from artists like Iris Le’Mour, Olive Avira, MayMay Graves, and Draconis. Within a couple of months, I auditioned for the school’s in-house burlesque troupe, The Cats, and I earned a spot! Things started moving very quickly after that. My very first burlesque performance with them was at The Houston Burlesque Festival just a month later. We performed with burlesque Legend Judith Stein, had our own featured showcase show, and even won Best Dance Troupe in Dallas by the Dallas Observer. During this time I started modeling. My first photoshoot was for The Cats and since then, I’ve worked with several local photographers doing Boudoir, Pinup, and Live Sketch modeling. I hope to one day be a published Pinup model. After about a year with The Cats, I decided to do something I had never dared to do before, gogo dance. With a ton of research and a prayer, I auditioned for the 60’s Super Gogo troupe The Pistolettes. A diverse, authentic 60’s gogo troupe that has performed all over the country, including Tiki Oasis in California. The energy I brought, my dance background, and the drive to never give up impressed the troupe and I became a new member. Since then I have gogo’d all over Dallas at burlesque shows, sketch nights, parades, special events and more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been the smoothest. I don’t have a dance background at all, and I didn’t have the support to follow these dreams until the last few years. At 28, I am starting my dance journey a bit late, but I won’t let that stop me. I’ve struggled through severe depression but being on the stage has been a light for me.
The Pistolettes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a burlesque dancer, 60’s gogo performer, and Pinup model. I love EDM and Flow Art so much that I incorporate these into my performances. When I’m performing burlesque, I have high energy beats and sounds mixed with poi and levitation wand with a classic burlesque twist. I also perform with The Pistolettes and we’re known for our high energy vintage gogo sets. Authentic dance moves, fringes, and sparkle, with an Austin Powers vibe.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Performing with burlesque Legend Judith Stein.
