Today we’d like to introduce you to Eden Williams.
Hi Eden, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I never thought about being a photographer. It wasn’t until I was planning my own wedding and found myself addicted to scrolling through photography blogs that I saw the true art of creating photos. I got my first DSLR camera in 2013 and dabbled in photography between teaching high school math and coaching cheerleading. My husband and I had our first daughter in 2016, which is when I quit teaching and launched Eden Williams Photography! I now do photography full-time between staying home with my three little girls!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I started dreaming of being a photographer, it was just that– a dream! It seemed like such an uphill battle to actually make it happen in such a saturated market. I’m glad that I taught myself and practiced A LOT before I ever took on clients, and then slowly gained more clients as I improved. So, in that way, my business started up much more smoothly than expected.
That’s not to say there weren’t struggles along the way! First of all, I am actually pretty introverted, but that’s something you cannot lead with if you are going to make your clients feel comfortable in front of the camera! So, I’ve had to learn to be intentional about making sure my clients trust me and feel confident and relaxed for their session.
Another struggle is comparison. There are SO many talented photographers that it’s easy to think, “Am I good enough?” or question your style when viewing others’ work! But over time, the timeless, bright, and clean style that I’ve developed is something I am really proud of, and I can appreciate and be inspired by others’ beautiful images without comparing them to my own.
My biggest struggle now is balancing motherhood with my business. My heart for my business is to serve and love my clients well, but my family is my first priority. I never want to wish away these young years with my kids, so that means I have to set boundaries for myself for when I am able to work and how many people I can serve at a time. I hate having to turn people away! There just has to be a balance to set limits so that my family and my clients are getting the best from me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in natural light family and wedding photography. Most of my work is portraits–I limit the number of weddings that I do throughout the year so that I can serve my couples well with a high-end experience and fast turnaround times! My favorite thing to capture is joy! From getting engaged to welcoming a new baby, capturing families as they grow and change is so special to me! Freezing moments in time that don’t just remind you how to looked, but how you *felt* is just magical. I’m known for my clean and light-filled style. While I admire the art of other styles, it is so important to me that I provide timeless photos that are true to life! I am proud of the way I serve my clients (providing my EWP Session Guide, style tips, helping them feel confident that we got great photos even if the session felt chaotic, quick turnaround times, etc.) and I think that is what makes me stand out! By the time I deliver their photos, I feel like many of my clients are my friends because I truly put a lot of love into every session and wedding.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Such an interesting question! I think luck does play a role in the small moments, but you can’t blame big things on luck. Thick clouds and rain hit unexpectedly in the middle of a session that was supposed to have beautiful light? That’s bad luck. But the bigger things I count as blessings.
