Meet Edgar Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Miller.

Edgar, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started Edgar Miller Images at the beginning of this year to expand my own photography. I had been the director of education at a local camera store and the business was slowing. I felt I could fill my downtime between classes with personal and commercial photo projects. So far, I have been much busier than I ever imagined! On top of that, I still enjoy sharing my knowledge teaching photo classes, private lessons and leading photo expeditions to picturesque places. I have a B.F.A. from Lamar University in southeast Texas and also taught high school art and photography. I’ve accumulated 20 plus years of professional teaching and it was 40 years ago that I stepped into a dark room to develop and print my first rolls of black and white film. Whether it’s drawing, painting or photography, I’m continuing my pursuit of interesting light on interesting subjects.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a surprisingly smooth road. I have my very supportive wife of 27 years and very few complications in my life. Maybe the biggest challenge is making the jump to being self-employed. The planning, set up and maintenance to being self-employed has several steps into the realm of business and I’d rather be photographing.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My elevator pitch about my business is that I help people remember. Either by helping them make better photos through my lessons and classes or by hiring me to take the photographs. I’d like to say I specialize in great photographs of people, places, and things. My combination of strong technical and aesthetic knowledge sets me apart from other photographers and allows me to be creative at a higher level. I’d like to say I’m known for being creative, enthusiastic and genuine.

What were you like growing up?
I was born in Texas and immediately moved overseas because of my dads’ job in the oil industry. My late dad was definitely an influence because he was always taking photos. We lived in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The influences of different countries and cultures are a permanent part of my open personality. Those experiences along with being an EMT in college when I was a biology/pre-med major have made me the helpful, analytical and creative person I am today. My other interests range from astronomy to cars, to hunting.
