Today we’d like to introduce you to Eduardo Harris.
Eduardo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Right after I got back from active duty training in the marine corps and started reserve duty, I started in land surveying. The owner I worked for closed his doors one day and laid everyone off that morning. My manager found me a position as superintendent in their custom home department, so I continued working with them. I enjoyed that so much I began a construction management program with Northlake college. I worked full time and took the classes at night. I’ve worked as an electrician in commercial and residential and have done and managed everything from digging utilities into a slab before the foundation pours to inspecting the shingles or roof system that has been installed. My goal has always been to become a superintendent in commercial construction and then use the experience to start a company of my own. After marrying my wife, Zuli, last year in July, we decided that together we would do it. We saw a need in the industry for better service and communication, and I can see a demand for another level of quality and supervision on the project. We started it this past August and so far so good, a little slow now but still good. All with good faith and hard work, it’ll work out.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This time It haven’t been doing it long enough to say we have had bad times. Work is slow but that happens. I did this once before without my wife as my partner and a full time job as a project manager with a construction company, and it wasn’t very easy. Leaving my 9-5 and driving across the metroplex to inspect a remodel or walk with a customer, I wouldn’t make it home until 10 pm and still had to cook dinner. It’s been different this time, and it has allowed me to spend time on the social media site and learning how to market the company.
Please tell us about your work.
Lately, we have been doing fences, and home remodels/additions. We want to move into new commercial construction of projects along the lines of tilt-wall warehouses, all while maintaining home remodels. I have an idea for building a certain type of home on acreage for the right client that I’m keeping close to my chest for now. Hopefully, it will manifest in the future. The reason I want to maintain the remodels is because it’s dear to the customer the majority of the time. It’s always an opportunity to design and build something that stands out from the previous one (respectfully) with a personal touch from the client. To be able to incorporate something important to them makes the experience that much better. I want to say what sets us apart is the quality of the work that we are going to turn over to the client. I want it to impress, and I want people to know most importantly that it was done right.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First of all, Jesus Christ for everything that I have and am. Next, my wife, for being my partner in this journey. Everything that I always slacked on doing it by myself, she handles effortlessly and makes my day easier. My family for always supporting decisions that my siblings and I have made and pointing us in the right direction to find the answer if they didn’t have it. The Dallas Metropolitan SBDC who helped mentor me in the beginning in 2014, and the Marine Corps for showing me that determination is endless and good integrity and character never fail.
