Meet Edward Reynoso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Reynoso.

Edward, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started shooting YouTube videos when I was 14. I shot with one of my dad’s dusty old cameras and the computer I used to edit on was so run down that it would crash any time I tried to render a video. By the time I was 18, I had bought my own laptop and DSLR from a pawn shop for a little under $200. I shot videos and photos of my friends throughout high school. Uploaded them online. Went to film school. Learned what ISO meant and molded my passion for photography and film! Afterward, my older brother and I started our own media production company called 2×2 Media, LLC located in Denton, TX.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For a long time, my biggest struggle was falling victim to comparisons, specifically in regards to other photographers. Everyone has a camera these days, so it can be easy to get in your head about not being good enough. Over time though, I learned that art isn’t a competition and if you have cool ideas and a strong vision for things, there is certainly going to be room for them. Likewise, I’ve always struggled with feeling overwhelmed. Whether it’s due to an overload of projects or simply not doing enough, it’s a feeling that has followed me for some time. I often attempt to express this emotion in my work. It’s the reason why I’m constantly experimenting with composition and colorful montages. I want the viewer to be overwhelmed by the photograph itself. I want them to stare at it and really look at all the different elements of which the photograph is composed of. For me, it’s a way to convert what I have dealt with on a personal level into something people can experience and analyze visually. I think being able to turn what makes you feel negative into something of artistic value is a key reason for creating art.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I like expressing the way people and the world make me feel through risky and unconventional ideas. My medium for that is both film and photography. When it comes to film, I’ll shoot music videos and documentaries. When it comes to photography, my style ranges from photomontage to fashion. I set a strong emphasis on colors, composition, and emotion. My style is a culmination of all the artists I’m fascinated by such as Dexter Navy, Frank Lebon, Camneh, Aiden Cullen, Hidji Films, and Grant Singer. My goals are to create work that properly conveys the stories of the subjects I document, stays true to my stylistic nature, and that I can look back on and be proud of.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s tough to pinpoint a specific moment that I’d consider the proudest of my career. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, but my mind is always thinking about the next project. I’m very critical of myself as an artist and I still feel that I’m working myself up to where I want to be. I have a long way to go and a lot of figuring out to do. I just want to stay open to the opportunities that may come my way and continue to learn as much as I can about my craft!
