Meet Elbert Lawrence of Directed By: Films in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elbert Lawrence.

Elbert, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been a storyteller and a fan of art and fashion. When I failed at writing and photography couldn’t tell the stories I wanted to tell, I decided to use films and video as an outlet and paintbrush. Starting Directed By: Films was an easy decision because it allowed me to have the freedom to tell stories I wanted to tell and allowed me to have my hand on the entire process.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The most challenging part with Directed By: Films is the fact that I am only 23 years old. Most of my clients are high paying and almost double my age so getting them not to write me off from the jump can be a challenge. A lot of meetings, I walk into the first thing they ask is “How old are you?” Trusting a 23 y/o with thousands of dollars isn’t ideal for everyone lol.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
We are a collective of storytellers aiming to help brands, businesses, and people turn their ideas into life through film and video.

Collaboration is our main mission, working with others and having a collection of ideas to bounce each other is what makes our work special.

What were you like growing up?
Basketball was my first love. I was everything basketball and wanted to be involved in basketball my entire life. Until I played in college and realized that I didn’t want playing college sports to be the only thing I had an interest in. So, art and fashion became my second hobby. I studied art and some of the most fashionable people and events in the world. I would go to modern art museums every week and just became inspired to make my own type of art.
