Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Brasher.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Of course! This was never imagined as a career path and still to this day, I am amazed at what I get to do – the bug started long before I knew what an esthetician was (long LONG before). I remember my mother bringing home a DIY skincare book when I was around 12 and we would have the best time cock-tailing everything from bath soaks to face masks, she would let me do her pedicures and I would try every magazine beauty tip to treat my acne-spotted skin. I graduated high school in 2007 and did not enter an esthetician licensing program until 2011. My first question in the classroom was “So, what IS a facial?,” as I had never visited a spa, dermatologist or anything of the sort. Everyone in the room looked as if I had two heads because why would someone do this if they had no idea what they were getting in to?
After that first day, opening up my textbook and reading about the rich history of beauty and skin treatments I fell in love immediately. My instructors at Ogle School of Hair Skin Nails were amazing and I quickly immersed myself in their knowledge; reading everything I could get my hands on (my collection of textbooks is astounding), offering myself as a practice model (losing more than a few hairs and layers of skin) and practicing on others (most of my friends still love me). I finished school early, took my boards and landed my first job before I had my license in hand. During this time, I met my now-husband whom has been a rock and was fascinated by what I got to call a “job” and cheered along with every milestone. I worked my first few years building a solid clientele and booking myself into every training class I could find. The International Dermal Institute was and continues to be, an amazing source of advanced education and eventually, I earned my 100-Hour Post-Graduate Training certificate. In the next couple of years, I excelled even further, receiving certificates in Permanent Cosmetics, Electrolysis Hair Removal and Spray Tanning. I wanted to learn it all – even if I knew I would not end up utilizing every skill set, I wanted the knowledge to be able to speak with my clients on an in-depth level, devising treatment plans and schedules around other services they were currently receiving and offering advice for the best outcome.
I spent the next couple of years working in a medical spa really understanding the ins and outs of medical aesthetic procedures. This opened up a whole new chapter; I worked as both an esthetician and a medical assistant and grew to learn clients need both pre- and post- preparations to really make treatments work the way they intend, also that “More is not indeed better.” The unique blend of holistic care with a targeted treatment-oriented approach is where I found my happy medium – the skin must be cared for and managed before deeper correction can take place. That is exactly what we offer at Facelogic Spa of Murphy and as the Lead Esthetician, it is what I continue to offer and also train my staff on giving the exact care a client needs to address their concerns.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth is a relative word. This type of industry you only get out what you put in, it requires real work – mentally, emotionally and physically. I knew I could retain the information I was learning but to actualize it and put it into a plan for someone’s skincare was something that had to happen with trust and patience. This can be super frustrating when we live in a right here, right now, immediate gratification environment. When I first launched into the industry, clients did not believe I could help them due to my young age – so I hit the textbooks even harder to try and gain their confidence. Thank goodness for my spouse and my family telling me I am actually great at this! There were times I really did not believe them – that I wasn’t moving at a quick enough pace, I was building too slowly, I did not have enough experience, etc. Turning off that little voice was a breakthrough moment and I found my niche in this vast, quick-paced industry.
A couple of years into working, I noticed I had a lot of back and shoulder pain – the days spent bent over the head of the table doing treatments was starting to take its toll. I visited a chiropractor and he mentioned that at my age my spine should not look the way it did. The early retirement rate due to injury or illness in this field is substantially high. It was another wake-up call, I plan on doing this for many more decades to go – I started incorporating yoga practice and lifting weights to strengthen my core, back and shoulders and what an amazing difference it has made!
I also struggled with my own skin issues – acne, sensitivity, pigmentation and often felt like an impostor. I couldn’t get my own skin under control – how the heck were other’s supposed to trust me with theirs? I tried it all, and when I say I, I really mean all. The typical creams and lotions, prescription medicines, treatments – the dermatologist at the time wanted to put me on Accutane (a really harsh systemic medication) if that paints a picture of how desperate the situation got. Wanting to avoid that route, I sat down and really started to take a closer look at how acne triggers and treatment works. I started steadily changing my diet, realizing my acne was upset due to certain foods, ingredients – basically, anything that was mildly acne-causing upset my skin. Slowly, my skin started showing signs of maintaining clarity – walking outside without a drop of makeup on (but definitely SPF!) was one of the most freeing feelings I had ever had. I will always hold that feeling in my heart – its the same when my clients reach that level of true satisfaction with their skin. It’s truly what I live and strive for each and every day!

The spa is continuously growing! We have 6-treatment rooms and are adding on new talent to keep with our client demand. Being busy in this industry is never a bad thing – but growing a spa is an all-consuming process. We are planning some really exciting things coming up soon, but I can’t share them yet! We are always testing out new and exciting treatments to add on and listening to our guests to see what they are looking for. We have been in the Murphy area for nearly ten years and plan to be a cornerstone stop here as the entire area grows.
I, myself have recently had the chance to contribute published articles in trade industry magazines and plan to do more in the very near future!
