Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Rohe.
Elizabeth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was younger, I remember playing with my mom’s stethoscope and seeing photos of her wearing hospital scrubs. My mother was a burn unit nurse at Parkland Hospital in Dallas until she was tragically murdered in Cartagena, Colombia, when I was five years old. My journey with my career did not start with healthcare. I went to college at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA for Investment Management and Finance because that is what my father wanted me to do, so I followed along. I quickly realized that was not my passion, so I switched to Marketing and Entrepreneurship.
Once I graduated, my high school sweetheart moved to South Florida to attend law school. I joined him in Florida and soon thereafter decided I wanted to go to nursing school. I wanted to follow my mom’s footsteps. I graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a bachelor’s in nursing in 2012, and we then moved back to Dallas. I started working in the Neuro ICU, and eventually, the NICU. Working in the Neuro ICU and NICU was tough because I witnessed things I will never be able to erase from my memory. I am not sure nursing school prepares you for the real world in the hospital. In 2013 my high school sweetheart and I got married. Around that time, I started to develop some odd symptoms, including abdominal pain and mysterious feminine issues. I went from doctor to doctor, had unnecessary surgeries, and no one had an answer. I was feeling hopeless. I eventually turned to Chinese medicine, naturopathic medicine, and functional medicine, where you find the root cause of an illness and treat the body naturally. I cleaned up my diet and lifestyle, and I started taking natural supplements. Soon, my symptoms were gone!
I knew then that I wanted to work in functional medicine. I went on Craigslist and typed in the search engine “Functional Medicine.” Carpathia Collaborative appeared in the search, looking for a registered nurse. I applied for and got the job. The stars were aligned. Over the next couple years, I took courses through The Institute for Functional Medicine, submitted my case study, took a difficult exam, and became a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner in 2018. During that time, my husband and I were trying to start a family. It did not come easy for us. I was diagnosed with Endometriosis and was told our only option was IVF (In-vitro fertilization). After years of trying, surgeries, multiple rounds of IVF, and a miscarriage, we finally had our miracle daughter in 2018. Throughout that process, I learned a lot about fertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, and hormones. With my certification in functional medicine, I wanted to help others. I currently see clients at Carpathia Collaborative, not just for fertility and hormones, but for overall gut, skin, and other general health concerns. I love what I do. I am currently attending Family Nurse Practitioner School at Texas Woman’s University.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
At first, I had a hard time finding my purpose. I knew the ins and outs of detoxing and living a toxin-free life, I just did not know if other people were interested in that. When I first started living an organic, chemical-free life around 2014, it didn’t seem to be the norm. I would get weird looks from others and critical comments. It wasn’t until I had my own fertility struggles that I realized that I have a voice and can help others in their journey in all aspects in life. I knew that I had the knowledge and information to share with others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in the functional medicine field, which focus’ on personalized care. I work to identify your triggers to your symptoms. Once I identify your triggers and needs for your body through comprehensive testing, I come up with a plan that involves improving nutrition, sleep, exercise, emotional and gut health. I am most known for hormone balance, preconception health, fertility, multiple miscarriages, and prenatal health. I want others to know there is another option that they can seek for support. I do not know of another Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner in the DFW area that focus’ on these areas. I also love helping others improve their digestive health, skin, headaches, and much more.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I am a down-to-earth, easy-going, free-spirited but responsible person. I can be more on the serious side but goofy at times as well. Friendship has always been very important to me. I spent a lot of time having or attending sleepovers. I was a competitive swimmer and played basketball for a short time. I enjoy dancing. I love to get to know people’s stories and really get to know someone on a deep level. I am a travel enthusiast visiting over 23 countries and 5 out of the seven continents around the world. I love learning about and experiencing different cultures and I love food.
