Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Sage.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. I began to paint in high school, and when it was time to decide what major to pick when I went off to college at TCU, I could see no other choice than to continue to pursue my art as a Painting major! It wasn’t until after my junior year at TCU, however, that I realized that I wanted to pursue my career as an artist after graduating. I discovered that my true passion was through painting landscapes, inspired mostly from my parent’s farm down in South Texas. My experience outside of the city allowed me to capture firsthand the changing light of a sunrise and sunset, the crispness of a clear blue sky, and the dewey, misty morning glow. I was able to transport myself to my family’s special place through these paintings.
When it came time to start growing the business side of my work, it took a lot of trial and error. I started posting my work more frequently to social media outlets, specifically Facebook and Instagram, which allowed me to gain my first bit of exposure. My business truly started to grow once I invested in the people around me. With the help of the successful women I became close with, I was able to expand my reach beyond that of just family and friends. Since graduating in 2016, I have learned what it takes to really want to succeed and understanding the strategy behind finding success as a small business. It takes a supportive community, true passion, and a determination to get the work done.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you? There is a definite learning curve to carving out a career as an artist! I definitely learned by trial and error! It only took one bad experience of stretching myself too thin to find ways to protect my business, my products and services, because when there is a healthy client relationship, the end result is always at its best! As a solo artist, practicing the willpower to get into my studio and make the time to create work takes discipline, and daily reminders of the rewarding nature of pursing my passion!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Elizabeth Sage Art – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others. I am primarily an oil and watercolor landscape painter. I work on both large and small scales, on paper and on canvas. I take commissions, so I love working with others to create the perfect painting for their home! I am most proud of the fact that the business side of maintaining a small business has not compromised the quality of my work. I am proud that I do not let the fear of experimenting get in the way of pushing my paintings to the next level. I firmly believe that art in the home adds a touch of beauty that no stock print or photo can have. It is a privilege to bring natural beauty from the outdoors to a canvas or piece of paper!
So, what’s next? Any big plans? I am looking forward to growing my online store to include more paintings of a wider range of sizes. I also want to have opportunities to have my art in galleries or shops and expand beyond online availability! I am currently working on building a collection of work for a show in Brenham, TX at Back Lot Gallery that I will be sharing with my best art-major friend, Olivia Nucci! After my wedding in April, I plan on digging in and making lots and lots of work in my studio!
