Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Gilbert.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My mother studied design in college, and while she focused her time and talents on us children growing up, I always loved her artistic sensibilities. I begged her to let me begin planning my dorm room a year before leaving for TCU. Studying interior design was a natural fit. I was passionate about spaces, beauty and how an environment impacts how one can feel. I was blown away when a professor taught us that space can even affect our body temperature. I realized that design goes deeper than just a pretty room; it can affect our everyday life experiences. I had a desire to elevate the everyday and create spaces that were more than beautiful; they were meaningful.
While in college I had various internships in the industry, one of which grew into a full-time position that I stayed in for years. I also worked for a builder which helped me grasp building processes. My first independent project was volunteering for local philanthropy designing a space to aid the Como community. I began to get calls from people who had seen space and friends ready to dive into their own home projects. It’s been a treat to continue to be designing and growing ever since. May marks eight years of Emily Gilbert Designs.
Has it been a smooth road?
Whatever the industry, running a business is never easy. It’s great to have the flexibility to be able to run to a school function without permission, however, owning a business can also ‘own’ you. Truly non-working vacations can be hard to come by as well as establishing clear boundaries for working and non-working hours. I wouldn’t trade my job for the world, but there are certain aspects of it that can be challenging.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Emily Gilbert Designs is a full-service interior design company. I focus on residential interiors. Transitional spaces are my happy place, but I love to dive into modern aesthetics when the opportunity arises. I believe that home needs to be beyond beautiful. It is where life’s moments are lived, and where form and function can collide to create a space that lives well.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe its hard to predict the future, however, our tech world has taken over in almost all areas of life. The internet has made design accessible to the masses, and tech has become a more integral part of the home.
We don’t see the ‘home stations’ of the ’90s as much since computers are now more mobile. Filing needs have been reduced since many things can be stored in clouds. I foresee we will continue to adapt to a tech world and strive to create more opportunities in the home for in-person connection.
