Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Gilliam.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was able to find photography at the perfect moment in my life. I had gone through a rough patch and not only had a hard time expressing myself but also managing my mental health. One day my father gave me his old camera and he taught me everything I needed to know to start shooting. Like most, I mainly went out and took landscape photos but I also started taking self-portraits as well. Through those, I was able to communicate what I was thinking and feeling without ever having to say a word. It gave me a sense of freedom and once I started taking trips exploring the vast landscapes and architecture of Texas, the feeling became more real. After graduating high school, my family moved to Texas and by chance, I ended up taking a tour at The Art Institute of Dallas. Through my time there, my focus has shifted from photographing landscapes to architecture. I’ve spent the last two years not only learning and growing in photography but myself as well. Currently, I’m about to complete an Associate of Applied Science in Digital Photography there.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like most, I’ve had my fair share of rough patches. I’ve lost people that I love and I’ve seen my family broken. I’ve struggled with my self-worth, anxiety, and depression. I spent a great deal of time not knowing who I was and trying to find those missing pieces. But in spite of all of that, I found happiness, peace, and a new meaning of family. This road has to lead me to where I am today and to what I love to do. I don’t think anyone can avoid the twists and turns that life throws at us. But it’s what you do with it that makes a difference. Despite all of it, I wouldn’t change the past because I wouldn’t be where I am today.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m still a growing photographer but I’ve found a special interest in architectural photography. I’ve spent a great deal of time traveling around Texas finding unique locations, from commercial buildings to abandoned towns. There’s a unique beauty in each building that most people overlook. Each structure was thoughtfully designed and I found a love for finding the perfect formula to highlight each detail the architect had in mind when constructing the building.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on continuing my education and build my portfolio. As always I look forward to whatever challenges come next and to just continue doing what I love most.
