Meet Emily Mussett of Emerald Bee Interiors, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Mussett.

Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I approach design as a dialogue between structure and artistry — where form and creativity work in harmony. My background is a little different from most designers — I hold dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Architecture and Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University — and that technical foundation continues to shape how I approach every project. I’m endlessly fascinated by how beauty and practicality coexist, and I think that balance is what makes a home truly livable.

Before founding Emerald Bee Interiors, I spent years refining my process and learning how to design spaces that don’t just look good in photos but actually work for the families who live in them. With the rise in telecommuting, we’re spending more time in our homes than ever before, and I launched Emerald Bee Interiors with the goal of helping clients create homes they genuinely enjoy spending time in. By applying architectural design principles in a practical, approachable way, I strive to transform everyday spaces into environments that not only function beautifully but also support the rhythms of real life.

Today, I specialize in residential design that bridges architectural structure and artistic expression. From walk-through consultations and virtual design to full-service projects, I meet clients where they are in their design journey — helping them shape spaces that reflect their story, their habits, and the moments that matter most.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The same year I launched Emerald Bee Interiors, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer — a moment that completely reshaped my understanding of balance, perseverance, and grace. Navigating treatment while nurturing a brand-new business was one of the hardest seasons of my life, but it also reminded me why I started this in the first place: to create spaces that bring comfort and calm in the midst of chaos. I’m endlessly grateful to the clients who extended patience and understanding as I balanced caring for my physical health with managing a growing studio.

Even now, as a one-woman business, there are challenges that come with wearing every hat — designer, administrator, marketer, photographer, web developer, and communicator — all rolled into one. It’s a constant juggling act between the creative work that fuels me and the behind-the-scenes responsibilities that keep the business running. But each obstacle has reinforced my appreciation for the process and my gratitude for the trust clients place in me to help bring their vision to life.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Emerald Bee Interiors is a residential design studio based in Wylie, Texas, dedicated to helping homeowners create spaces that feel as functional as they are beautiful. I work with clients at every stage of the process — from quick walk-through consultations and virtual design plans to full-service furnishing and new construction projects. My goal is to meet clients where they are, whether they’re looking for expert guidance on a single room or a cohesive, start-to-finish transformation of their entire home.

What sets Emerald Bee Interiors apart is the balance between technical precision and creative vision. With formal training in both Architecture and Civil Engineering, I approach every space through the dual lens of structure and artistry. Each project begins with a deep understanding of flow, proportion, and purpose, then layers in color, texture, and personality to bring the design to life.

In addition to full-service design and construction consultation, I also offer “design-only” and virtual options that allow clients to implement plans at their own pace, as well as niche services like custom painting and bespoke textiles. No two projects ever look the same because no two families live the same way — and that individuality is what drives everything I do. At the heart of my brand is an unwavering belief that great design is intentional, timeless, and deeply personal.

Any big plans?
This is always the hardest question for me — not because I don’t have dreams for the future, but because I’m so immersed in the present. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have steady client work and a business that continues to grow through word of mouth and community support. As a one-woman show, I manage every aspect of Emerald Bee Interiors myself — from design and client communication to marketing, photography, and project administration — so there’s rarely a quiet moment to step back and plan what’s next.

For now, my focus is on continuing to serve my clients well and maintaining the level of quality and detail that my brand is known for. I have a very specific process and high standards for every deliverable I send out, and that’s something I never want to compromise. That said, I’ve started to imagine what it might look like to mentor an apprentice or junior designer one day — someone I could teach the ropes to and share not just the creative side of design, but the business operations and project management skills that truly make a design practice successful.
