Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Kessel Granoff.
Emma, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2014, I started Sunkiss “Your Tanning Concierge”, a mobile airbrush tanning service. I always loved spray tans, and remember thinking how convenient and how much time you could save if you could have it done without having to leave your house. I immediately did training and certification and practiced spraying my friends. Shortly after, I started building up my clientele one client at a time through word of mouth. I grew up in Park Cities, and my main demographic became Park Cities moms and their high school daughters. However, Sunkiss services all over Dallas (Park Cities, Preston Hollow, Lakewood, North Dallas, Uptown, & Plano). In 2016, I then branched out to create my own self-tanning products after constantly being asked by clients what I recommended. I didn’t love any specific product on the market, so I created my own that would closely match the same look and color of one of my custom airbrush tans. I now have Sunkiss On the Glow (a self-tanning mousse) and Sunkiss Glow Beyond (tan extending moisturizer). Up until 2017, it was just myself doing all the scheduling, spraying, and products. I now have two amazing girls that have joined Sunkiss and really helped the business grow.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The initial start of Sunkiss took a lot of self-motivation on my part because I had to build up a business and clientele from the ground up. It was all up to me to make my vision into an actual business. I put in a lot of hard work and long hours (beyond the typical 9-5), I would tan any time of day and night to build my experience and clientele. Because I did not have any business background, I went through a lot of trial and error and learned a lot on the spot.
Please tell us about Sunkiss.
Sunkiss is a mobile airbrush tanning service that brings the salon to you. We offer airbrush tanning in the privacy and convenience of your home. Our tanning technicians are in and out in about 20 minutes and bring everything needed to you. A lot of people think orange and streaky when they hear “spray tan”, but we strive to make everyone look as natural as possible. We have a range of colors to customize anything from just a light glow to a dark bronzed just back from the beach tan. All of our solutions are all-natural and organic, and the best part is they are odor-free, unlike so many others. Some clients prefer to tan regularly to maintain their color, and some tan for special occasions like a wedding, prom, or vacation. You can also host a group tan and make it a party with your friends.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to do anything differently, I would have hired help sooner. I have a hard time relinquishing control to others, especially when it comes to my business because I know how hard I worked to have the reputation that I have. Now, I think hiring extra help was the best decision for my business.
