Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Clanton.
Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked as a courier for Light Appraisal when I moved to Dallas to attend UTD back in 1999. As technology changed, I needed to evolve as well. I worked my way up the ranks, from courier, to office staff, to assistant, to appraiser, to finally partner; picking up a Masters in Business Administration along the way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
During my training and early years appraising…things were smooth. But when the recession of 2009 hit, the appraisal world was turned upside down. Suddenly we were faced with rules and regulations that quite honestly, felt unfair at the time. Overnight we lost our exclusive agreements with lenders and realtors and now faced only seeing a percentage of the work orders we had seen before. This forced us to modify our business plan and adapt to the new reality.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a local real estate appraisal firm. We pride ourselves in providing accurate, timely appraisals for the local real estate market. We are up front with lenders about our qualifications, as well as our limitations. We understand that the Dallas-Fort Worth market has a number of complexities and it is impossible to claim you understand them all. I am proud to say that as a company, we put accuracy above all else. Sometimes that may mean admitting a mistake (however rare that may be LOL). We will take the time to flush out all perspective information and will not be swayed by the opinions of others. We also strive to help people understand where value is derived from and how they can improve theirs. We have so many “HGTV” shows that mislead people into thinking spending $5K on granite in the kitchen will get them $50K in value.
What were you like growing up?
I loved football…still do. So for the majority of my formidable years, I played and watched football. I thought of myself as a tough guy, but fortunately I was friends with a real tough guy. He took care of a lot of the things I started. I was loud and honestly obnoxious through school, always looking for the next laugh…unfortunately I was not real concerned with the cost of those laughs.
