Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Lee.
Hi Eric, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always had an interest in art, and I first began painting in 1999 just as a hobby. In 2009 I started working in a tattoo shop in deep ellum, and that’s where I was introduced to painting tattoo flash and making wood cutouts. At the time I was apprenticing to be a tattoo artist. But I quickly fell in love with the process of making wood cutouts, and I did that the entire time I worked at the shop. After making wood cutouts for a few years, that led me to discovering sign painting, which kind of included all aspects of art that I’m interested in. I’ve always loved lettering, and I’ve always loved painting tattoo designs and cartoon characters. So, I kind of dove headfirst and went for it. I strive to be well-rounded and not just make or paint one specific thing. I enjoy doing projects for businesses, but I also enjoy making things for people to hang in their homes. Majority of my business is tattoo shops, salons, and barber shops.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like all businesses, it has its ups and downs. The most challenging thing for me has been being a one-man operation. You have to do everything from quoting jobs, planning how to execute jobs in a timely manner, designing products, running a website, and making content for social media since it’s such a big part of running a business now. All in all, it’s smooth sailing and very rewarding to take mine or someone else’s idea and bring it to life from nothing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I just enjoy making things for people in general. Whether it’s for your home or your business. My favorite things to paint are traditional tattoo imagery, classic cartoon characters, and bright, bold legible lettering. I strive to be well-rounded and paint everything from small signs/wood cutouts to large-scale storefronts or murals.
