Meet Erica Walker of Royal Mile Dispatching Service

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Walker.

Hi Erica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Royal Mile Dispatching Service in December of 2020. I had never thought about owning my own company, and then Covid happened. Luckily, I was blessed to be able to keep my job, but in the back of my mind, the thought of possibly being jobless with no income worried me. I worked at a Truckstop part-time in High School and wanted to drive a truck, but in 2009 that wasn’t a “woman” thing to do. During the Pandemic, I noticed a lot of companies either shut down or went out of business, but at the same time, semis were still running. I talked to my younger brother about becoming a Freight Broker, and he mentioned dispatching first to learn the trucking business. I researched several different companies and purchased a course on Cyber Monday, November 2020. We have been in business since December 11,2020.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. One of the biggest struggles I encountered was getting Owner Operators to hire me for their dispatching needs. Being that I was new to the trucking industry, I knew that it would take a lot for someone to trust me with their company. I probably called thousands of carriers, posted several indeed and Facebook ads, and left business cards everywhere for about a month and a half. I heard several NOs and was hung up on mid-sentence before one gave me a chance. My first carrier was a Power Only (Semi truck without a trailer) so booking loads for him required booking a trailer first that we could use and then securing profitable loads.

My second carrier’s driver reached out to me and explained that the owner of the company’s primary language was Spanish. He knew some English, but he had difficulty speaking and booking loads with brokers due to the language barrier. The driver had reached out to several people, but they couldn’t find anyone willing to work with him. I took Spanish in High School(over 10 years ago) and couldn’t speak Spanish well, but I took on the challenge. We used the translation app on my iPhone to assist him with keeping his drivers moving, and that man sent me four more companies.

We’ve been impressed with Royal Mile Dispatching Service, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Royal Mile Dispatching Service is a trusted freight dispatching company providing exceptional service to Dry Van, Reefer, Flatbeds, Step Decks, and Power Only Trucks across the United States. What sets us apart from the rest is our ability to communicate effectively with our clientele and always being available 24/7.

Whether you’re an Independent Owner Operator or Fleet Owner of several trucks, we believe in building and maintaining meaningful relationships by providing customer service above and beyond, negotiating profitable rates for our carriers’ break-even points, and providing personal customization for our carriers’ individual needs. Our job is to assist you with delivering goods and services throughout the United States.

We believe in providing our carriers with royal treatment while they take care of the load. We do this by booking loads with reputable brokers and shippers, offering our carriers 24/7 access to their dispatchers, handling back-office needs, submitting loads for payment via factoring or invoicing, and providing DOT compliance needs to our carriers.

What makes you happy?
Being able to help people makes me happy. I strive to better myself and those that are in contact with me. I like to know people’s goals and try to push them toward reaching those goals. If I cannot help or if it’s a field I’m not knowledgeable in, I try to put them in contact with someone who can.
