Today we’d like to introduce you to Errfa Tirmizi.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey started in Edmonton, Canada, where at a young age, I realized I was equally passionate about both the Sciences and the Creative/Visual Arts. Throughout my education and experiences, I struggled to focus on just one or the other, so I instinctively balanced both.
I studied Immunology and Infectious Disease, while also practicing photography to inspire my imagination and connect with my surroundings. I would save up to purchase a new digital camera every 3-5 years, until I finally entered the world of DSLR, thanks to my thoughtful parents. To celebrate my university graduation, they gifted me a Canon DSLR camera, and inadvertently ‘volunteered’ me as the family photographer for celebrations and large events, locally.
This balance of science and art was further refined, when I moved to Toronto and was awarded the opportunity to work as a certified Medical Photographer, alongside being a Medical Scientist!
I then moved to Dallas in 2016, where I started a new life with my husband. Here, I continued my scientific career path as a Cancer Researcher and aspired to integrate photography back into my life, this time in the form of a business. This desire is how Tirmizi Photography came into the picture. (Ha!)
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. After moving to a new country and without immediate access to my established social groups back home, I felt isolated in a way I have never experienced before. However, I am grateful for the support of my husband and family, in helping me adjust to my new life, especially with starting this business. It has allowed me to grow my creative outlets and form special bonds and friendships with clients through my work.
Please tell us about Tirmizi Photography – what should we know?
I am the lead photographer at Tirmizi Photography. My husband and I work together to provide family, portrait, and event photography. I started this business with a goal to not only capture special and unforgettable moments for clients; but to also show them a perspective of themselves, which may be previously unknown.
Whether it’s their natural beauty, their inimitable smile, or that special way they look at their loved ones, I always want my clients to see their photographs and learn something new about themselves. I want them to be confident and appreciate their uniqueness.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel patience is the essential factor in ensuring the best outcomes, and the key to my own success. It’s important to me that my clients become comfortable being in the limelight, as many have never experienced it before. A successful shoot is always the result of making a genuine connection with my clients based on their needs and expectations, and I recognize this doesn’t always happen immediately; therefore I never rush this process. I simply enjoy being in that moment with them, and freezing this time in a snapshot.
