Today we’d like to introduce you to Errion Dominguez.
Errion, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Pottery has always intrigued me. It was my secret love that I didn’t share with anyone. I always liked to watch videos of artists creating different types of vessels and other useful things. My imagination started seeing nice colorful decors in different places, homes and offices. I knew I was ready to start making things like them. It wasn’t until the fall of last year I decided to take a class for wheel throwing. This is a form of shaping clay on a spinning wheel. I fell in love with it as soon as I touch the clay. Sound cheesy, right, but I felt comfortable to say it was my first time ever doing pottery. I must say my work was amazing.
All three pieces were sold. That was my green light! I took another pottery class in January of this year and afterward knew I was ready to create more pottery art as a business for myself. Of course, time and life never allowed me to until this pandemic. Another problem I ran into was not having a pottery wheel, a piece of very expensive equipment needed for this type of work. So, I decided to take another route and start hand building. I was forming the clay into whatever mold or shape I’m inspired to create. I never took a class on this technique. This is all self-taught. I’m experiencing and overcoming any challenges as I go. This is something that I love because it’s my uniqueness, one of a kind creation for my buyers.
I started by making an Instagram page to display my work. The first line of pottery art was incense holders and small bowls. I continue to surround myself with like-minded people who saw my talent and encouraged me to move forward with my passion.
Has it been a smooth road?
Everything has its challenges. From the start, I didn’t have the tools and equipment I was trained on using because of the cost of them, but I managed to find a way to still create. I worried somewhat throughout this pandemic, about my sales, not doing as well as I would like after taking a leap of faith. Expenses, you know it takes money to make money.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Ase’ Collection is a home base pottery/ceramic business. All my work is handmade. My favorite piece to make and most popular at the moment is my “Motion Bowl” it’s a very versatile piece. I’m most proud of creating something that’s different and adds value to my client’s space. Seeing my art in my customer’s homes fills me with joy and motivates me even more. I create what I am inspired by. I feel we all have our own uniqueness that God gave us. I mold and create what I feel.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Dallas is great for any business. It’s more populated than Oklahoma City and has a lot of advantages. Yes, if they have the means to move to Dallas, I would say, “go for it!”
