Today we’d like to introduce you to Esmeralda Martinez.
Esmeralda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was little I’ve always been captivated by colors, prints and different patterns. I was always into wearing things that no one else would wear but would think was cool when they saw it on me. I started expressing my style more and more as I grew older and it was until my Sophmore year of College that I started to style others. Then Junior year came and I would style my photo shoots with my friend Kevin Fides. After that, I was lucky enough for many to see my work and since then I have been working with different photographers, who allow me to showcase my art in styling in their photos.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No actually, it’s been pretty tough. There’s so many creatives out there and so many cool and unique individuals that you really have to show off and offer something different than others haven’t. It took me a long time to be confident enough to start offering my styling to others. But I like the challenges, it drives me to be better every time and to express myself even more.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is barely starting, I offer styling services to whoever likes my portfolio. It started with my Instagram just being for my own eyes to now having people comment on my outfits and ideas. Photographers reach out to me to style their photo shoots. They communicate their theme and ideas and I come up with different garments and outfits that beat fit their vision.
What I am most proud of is that even though I do work with a lot of styles I have kept my feet on the ground about always exhibiting a piece of my personal style in the photos. I believe that what sets me apart from others is that I am a very open-minded person who is willing to try the craziest styles and still make it pleasing to the eye.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
In 5-10 years I see myself growing as an artist and having my own name to where I get to have more control over my services. I can see myself traveling and offering ideas to many creators. I also want to expand it to where I start doing creative directing, managing more things at once and having a team of talented individuals. I want to show trends through all of my work.
