Meet Evelyn Gallardo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Gallardo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Evelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Graphic designing kind of came to me as a surprise. I accidentally got put into a graphic design class my sophomore year of high school. I had no idea what it was and I was going to drop the class because it was a class that I didn’t sign up for but at the end, I decided to give it a try but little did I know, it was going to become something that I now love doing, not just as a job but as a hobby. After learning that I was surprisingly good at graphic design, I decided to keep at it for the rest of high school, I took my designs to art shows and competitions and I loved seeing what people thought of the stuff I created. I knew after learning so much about what I could create, that it was something that I wanted to turn into a career. So, I decided to go to The Art Institute of Dallas and get a degree in graphic design. During college is when I started freelancing, I also worked at a print shop at the time, Precision Reprographics in Garland, so I learned the production side of graphic design and that came in handy when I started freelancing. After a while, I started posting my work online when I made an Instagram page and little by little I’m getting more and more clients from either family, friends or referrals. I just feel like I’ve come so far from where I started, knowing nothing and not even knowing that’s what I wanted to be doing and it all happened as an accident. But I love what I do and I want to continue to grow my business and one day make it my full-time job. I always say I love making people’s ideas come to life with my designs.

Has it been a smooth road?
I mean it’s been smooth for the most part. I feel like learning the main programs such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop came pretty naturally to me since I enjoyed it so much, it just didn’t really seem like work to me. Every now and then in my free time, I look up tutorials of different stuff that I want to learn and then apply it to my own designs. I’ve learned that graphic design is used everywhere in every business somehow. So, I think what I have struggled with it so far has been finding a job after college since graphic design is a very competitive field but it just makes me want to work harder on my work to be able to stand out from the rest.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Evelyn Gallardo Graphic Design story. Tell us more about the business.
I don’t really have anything specific that I specialize in, I like to challenge myself and accept any project that I can get my hands on. Plus, I get to put in more in my portfolio that way. So far, stuff that I’ve done are invitations, business cards, logos, flyers, banners, booklets, publications and advertisements. I’ve also started learning motion graphics and video editing, which I think would really give me more to offer in my business if I really get into it. But overall what I think sets me apart from others may be that I have experience working at a print shop, so with that, I’m able to suggest certain ways to print their ideas after I’ve created them or what kind of material would work best with what they’re wanting.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My goal is to one day get enough clients and make my freelancing business a full-time job, so over the next five-ten years, I can see myself working my business full time with my fiance as my partner.
