Meet Ezra and Gina Kuenzi of Connect Home Health in North Richland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ezra and Gina Kuenzi.

Ezra and Gina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In June 2006 our first nephew, Dillon, was born not breathing. As a result of his lack of oxygen at birth, he suffered severe brain damage. Dillon has multiple medical issues that require continuous skilled nursing care. For many years Ezra’s brother and sister-in-law struggled to find a reliable pediatric home health care agency and nurses that took a personal interest in Dillon and their family. Many shifts were left unfilled, and many nurses were there to simply punch the clock. Watching our family’s struggle first hand, we decided to start a pediatric home health care agency. We set out with the goal of simply providing each patient with the same level of care that we would want for Dillon. In 2014, we accepted our first pediatric patient. Since that time, we have steadily grown and now provide in-home care to children all across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. We have learned that you can’t always connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. Our family’s struggle has provided us with the opportunity and motivation to help other families facing similar situations.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest struggles in growing our business is to find quality nurses who are the “right fit” for each patient. Because we provide care in someone else’s home for generally 40 hours a week or more, we feel that it is very important to find nurses who can balance varying (and sometimes difficult) situations and whose personalities fit with each particular family. There are a lot of great nurses, but they may not necessarily be the right fit for a particular patient and their family. Finding the right fit can take time and a lot of effort.

Please tell us about Connect Home Health.
We specialize in private duty nursing for pediatric clients (age range is from newborn to 20 years old). This means that we provide chronically ill children with skilled nursing care in their own home for typically 40 hours a week or more.

We are proud of the bond that our nurses develop with their patients. Having a nurse who is more like family can mean the world to these children and their families. We are proud of how our nurses have stepped up in some of the most difficult circumstances.

One of the biggest differences between Connect Home Health and other pediatric home health care agencies is the way we staff our patients. Most agencies will hire any nurse that comes through the door and fill shifts with a variety of nurses. Our business model is different. We hire specifically for each patient based on their needs and family dynamics. Our goal is to find nurses that will be able to connect with patients and their families on a personal level. We ultimately let each child’s family decide whether or not a nurse is a good fit for them and their child.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
No, every difficult moment has helped shape Connect Home Health into the agency it is today. We view each struggle as an opportunity to grow and learn. We hope to continue to learn and adapt to the changing industry and to the needs of our patients and staff.

How wonderful that you saw a need for skilled pediatric nursing care and took it upon yourselves to fill it. How blessed are your clients! Dillon would be so proud that he was the catalyst for your wonderful endeavor. May God richly bless your business and the lives you touch each day because of it. Too bad you are not located in Philly!
