Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Jackson.
Frank, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At 17 I was fired from Sonic and that’s when I realized I didn’t want to work for anyone ever again. With $70 worth of supplies from AutoZone and a Facebook page, Frank’s Detailing was born. I started in Mineral Wells, TX, a small dirt road town with 17,000 people, not necessarily the best place to begin an auto detailing company in. This taught me to focus on interior work as it was the only job I could really get. Little did I know, this was a blessing in disguise because it was interior details that would teach me to be a true perfectionist. See, with exterior details, it’s a single bigger surface to cover, but on the interior, there are more cracks and crevices than you could think of. With this, I realized that if I could perfect the interior aspect, then I would be able to perfect the exterior portion as well. After two years, I moved to Arlington, TX to continue my education at Arlington Baptist College and play college baseball.
When I first moved to the “big city”, I wasn’t able to grow the business as I had wished being that school and baseball were now my top priorities. This is when I found a local auto detailing company to work with that lasted 2 years. Working for the company, I quickly moved my way up to the top detailer within 6 months. At this company, I was able to truly expand my knowledge and skills of ceramic coatings and paint protection film (clear bra), as well as learn the intricate art of paint correction by working long nights and early mornings. My goal with this company was to become a part-owner because, after year one, I was starting to bring in more clientele and add actual value to the business side of things. Towards the end of year two is when I started to make a push to become a 25% owner but was merely declined and ignored. It was with this ignorance that I realized again that I had fallen into the trap of making someone else money while they worked their M-F 8-5 job and did this on the weekends. I wasn’t going to be just an employee anymore, I realized my worth and what brings to the table, and with that, Frank’s Detailing was reborn in September of 2018 with the goal of bringing the highest quality of work and best customer service to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
We originally started in a shared warehouse space (just big enough to fit one car) that I had begged the owner to allow me to use in exchange for two details a month. We worked out of this space for only a couple of months because of the fact that we needed more room and wanted to provide a professional experience for our clients. In January, we landed a deal with Reserve Auto Group and Richards Auto Sales to become the auto detailer, which has been huge for the fact that I was able to hire more employees and expand the business into an avenue that I had tried so hard to do while with the other company. Between school, baseball, and the business, time has not always been in my favor, but this is something that I have come to earn is a blessing because it has forced me to focus on my time management. We are now looking to expand and add another location to the Dallas/Frisco area and hire more employees.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, the struggle was narrowing down and accepting my market, interior details. Everyone went to 1 of the 5 cheap automatic car washes and usually only wanted their interiors detailed. When I was a part of the other detailing company, the struggle came with working alone most of the days. My boss worked an 8-5 job M-F which left me to do all the work during the week and he’d come in on the weekends. When Frank’s Detailing was reborn, the real struggle became evident to me fast. I had no shop, no van, nothing. That is when I bartered with Sylvia Roberts Designs to allow me to work out of her shop. At the time, I was driving an FJ Cruiser, and with no other options, I converted my FJ into a mobile detailing unit and hit the ground running. As we grow, the biggest struggle I have had is finding employees to trust and that are as detail-oriented as myself, but this is a struggle that all companies deal with. The truth is, as an entrepreneur, you will always have obstacles/challenges to deal with, because in the end, its what we signed up for, whether we realize it or not, the true challenge is learning to accept and deal with this.
Please tell us about Frank’s Detailing.
We are an automotive detailing and protection company. We offer services such as mobile auto detailing, XPEL paint protection film (clear bra), ceramic coatings, and paint correction. We specialize in mobile auto detailing and paint protection film mainly. In March 2018, I attended the school at XPEL in San Antonio to further advance my skills and knowledge in paint protection. We care the most about the customer. Being a small business, our customer service and consistent quality is what sets us apart from other companies. We strive to make real connections with our clients to truly understand what service they need, not want. Apart from that we constantly keep our clients up to date with scheduling, maintenance, during and after pictures and opportunities that come up that can help them in their day to day lives. We don’t want to be looked at as an “auto detailing” company, our goal is to be the company that you can trust with all your car needs. In the background, we have searched and found some of the most reliable companies that have the same morals and values that we have and can recommend to our valued clients.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing.
Everything that I have been through and will go through is supposed to happen for a reason. No matter what or who you believe in, we are all given a path that we must go through and it is our choice to embrace it and learn from it or ignore it and continue to fail. I know the goals for this company and work hard every day to reach them, but I also have the understanding that I will fail, but it is my job to learn from these failures and turn them into success, not only for the company but for the people who look up to me as well.
