Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabino Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Gabino. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing art as a hobby back in 1990. With no prior art education, art has always been a part of who I am.
Working as a Handyman for many years, I never thought I would be doing art for a living.
Inspiration came to me when I watched a speed painter on YouTube, it was so captivating to watch someone paint something so fast that I just had to try it. After deciding to explore speed painting, I wanted to create my own style, and so, I built my own gear (stand and canvases) that allows me to paint on large rotating canvases in size of 4′-6′-8′ and 10′.
Soon after I started creating art to music, specifically to songs that have a good story line or lyrics that inspire a story to be painted. I started creating art performances that last 3-5 minutes, the length of the songs.
Since then I have created about 50 different live art performance pieces to some of today’s most popular songs including pop, rock, country and Christian songs..
I am constantly finding new ways to improve my creative techniques in order to provide custom one of a kind art content for my clients.
I currently perform live shows for private parties, weddings, charity, fundraisers and corporate events in the DFW area.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth transition from handyman to creative live artist.
Some of the challenges have been the designing and the building of my performance gear that includes a lightweight aluminum canvas stand equipped with a spinning mechanism that allows me to rotate a canvas as big as 10′.
Other struggles have been the promoting of my speed painting style.
I had to prove that my style has a place in entertainment. I had the opportunity to audition for Americas Got Talent this past year and was to perform for the live auditions, but after 3 weeks of show taping delays AGT had all sorts of problems including the host Nick Cannon quitting the show. I received a notice that they were not able to fly me out to the taping in LA. They encouraged me to try again next year…
Live Speed Painter – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Live Speed Painter- Gabino Martinez is one of very few speed painters in the world.
Fast, vibrant and choreographed to music. That is the unique performance viewers experience when they watch Live Speed Painter Gabino Martinez and his highly entertaining live speed painting performances. This self-taught artist brings an explosive experience to a live show with a performance consisting of painting on a spinning canvas to a variety music. In a matter of minutes, a large blank canvas becomes a beautiful piece of art created from the lyrics or storyline of the song.
“There’s no time to think.” “You only have the length of a song or two to complete a painting, and I have to trust my instinct and energy to create something that relates to a specific subject matter.” I love seeing the reaction of folks seeing me perform for the first time. I love the fact that I am able to inspire creativity in everyone who witnesses any of my live performances.
My creative gift allows me to create art specific for events, birthday parties, anniversaries, weddings and many other events. Live Speed Painter has gained a great deal of local exposure in the Dallas area. I was Invited to perform on local morning TV show Good Morning Texas in 2016. Interviewed on The World Poker Tour TV series in 2014 and his art was shown on an ESPN episode of The World Series of Poker in 2015.
I am most proud of my ability to create specific art for any live event.
What sets me apart from others is the fact that I created my own style that no one can duplicate.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success not by the measure of status or prestige but by the amount of joy and inspiration I can bring to those who watch my live art performances.
My hope is that I can make a difference with my art and inspire our next generation to be as creative as one can be in everything that we do in our life.
