Meet Garrett Guzman of Refined Fitness in Central Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Guzman.

Garrett, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story actually begins back in 1999, when I was a freshman in high school, sitting alone in my bedroom, designing equipment layouts for my future gym. It was that year that I began weight training to improve my athletic performance, as I was a three sport athlete participating in football, basketball, and track. The day I picked up my first weight, there was an instant connection. I can remember spending hours researching the latest training and nutrition programs, whether through books, magazines, or the early forms of the internet – in pursuit of becoming an elite athlete. It was this same passion that drove me to pursue a degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, while also playing football. Not only was I able to receive the incredible classroom experience that KU offers, but I was also able to get the true hands-on experience through the football strength and conditioning program. While in college, I also worked at the Student Recreation Facility, where I was a Personal Trainer, Cardiovascular and Resistance Training Specialist, and a Facility Assistant. This gave me invaluable experience into all the roles of successfully running a health and fitness facility. Upon graduation, I earned several advanced certifications, and after spending one year in Wichita (Kansas), I moved to Dallas (Texas) to pursue a career at the Premier Club, now Lifetime Fitness. After spending over six years at that facility, and increasing my education and experience along the way, I made the move to open up Refined Fitness. It had been in the works since 1999, I was simply waiting for the right time.

Has it been a smooth road?
Overall, I feel incredibly blessed for the experience I have had thus far at Refined Fitness. While there have been some minor obstacles to overcome, the road has been quite smooth. I would say my greatest challenge is “wearing all the hats.” While I have an exceptional staff who helps me and I am so grateful for each and every one of them, it can still be quite difficult being the owner, manager, trainer, cleaner, repairman, and bookkeeper (amongst others). It can often feel like work is 24/7. Fortunately, I truly love what I do, which makes this challenge one that I can handle.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Refined Fitness – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the passion for health and fitness that Dallas possesses. You can see this in the number of fitness-related facilities we have (whether it’s large corporate gyms, personal training studios, yoga studios, Pilates/barre studios, cycling studios, dance studios, martial arts studios, etc.). And this is not even including the avid outdoor fitness scene that Dallas also enjoys. In addition, Dallas has increased its healthy nutritional offerings that focus on the “farm to table” concept, with increased locally-sourced fruits, vegetables, and meats.

The only thing that I dislike about Dallas, coming from Kansas, is the traffic.
