Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Paparella.
POParella’s was conceived, owned and operated by a family with a desire. We are the POParella’s, Liza, Natalie, Meagan and me, Gary. We relocated from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Frisco, Texas by way of career opportunities with my former company, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group. Not long after the relocation, the family made a life changing decision. The exhaustion from the corporate world was one factor in this decision. The desire to be self-employed, our enjoyment of people and the desire to be creative fueled our enthusiasm. What pushed us over the edge was the inspiration and support from each other and family members, we were convinced to open a family business, our choice, gourmet popcorn and candy store.
One of the first orders of business was to find a location to plant this new endeavor. We could have gone anywhere, but our older daughter, Natalie, pointed out the obvious: we were already living in the prime location for the launch of our new opportunity, Frisco, Texas.
Our next step was to hire a consultant to teach us about popcorn. Once we knew and understood the process backward and forward, we took the plunge!
We believed in Frisco and ourselves and financed the project with no bank loans, only our own funds. With our finances in order, our minds full of kernel knowledge and a few tricks up our sleeves, we opened the doors on November 24, 2008, just six months after the idea was conceived!
POParella’s has grown from under forty to over sixty, delicious tongue tingling flavors that are hard to keep in the house. Flavors like White Chocolate Oreo and Chocolate Peanut Butter to Nacho Jalapeno with our house favorite, Dill Pickle, and we keep the flavors coming. We have the best Biscotti in the country shipped in from our old town, Pittsburgh and serve coffee on those chilly days. Don’t forget our creamy fudge made on site!
POParella’s, also available at CINEMARK Movie Theater, Frisco Square location, Pole Position Go Cart Facility, The COOP and we also provide the POPcorn for Dr. Pepper Arena concessions in Frisco and a proud sponsor and Official POPcorn of The Texas Legends D-League basketball team for the Mavs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We opened in 2008 using our own money. Everyone knows but never expected the economy to crash! 2009 and 2010 were a disaster. We were able to keep a float by securing some corporate business and Christmas of 2010 we secured a significant holiday order that put us on the road to success!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the POParella’s gourmet popcorn & treats! story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a gourmet popcorn and candy store! We manufacture and retail/wholesale gourmet popcorn, candy, fudge and other treats!
