Today we’d like to introduce you to Maher Masri.
Maher, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Genuitec began in 2001 as an Enterprise Consulting Company and had to reinvent itself when the market collapsed after 9/11, both figuratively and literally.
Company was started by three partners who remain active in business today. Our current position in the Enterprise and Web application development market started with a hunch that the market (valued then at more than $30 billion) was about to experience a universal commoditizing force that was likely to leave an elephant graveyard in its wake. The only logical choice was to lead this wave rather than follow it.
But that was the least of the company challenges. Surviving in an open source driven market is not for the faint of heart. Competing with well-established giants while simultaneously watching equally driven startups varying for the same market kept many sleepless nights. The resulting dynamic market was changing daily and required constant adjustment to steer company direction. Genuitec was one of very few companies to lead the Software as a Service (SaaS) movement with changing the way enterprise software was valued and sold. Genuitec also lead the market in delivering rapid releases long before Continuous Integration (CI) was popular. As a virtual company from day one, Genuitec had to invent technologies and practices to enable hand-picked developers distributed across the globe. One could argue all of that could have been done with the right funding.
Unfortunately, or fortunately that was not our case. Starting with a meager capital, barely enough to buy computer for the founders, while self-funding all activities. It was a tough go for a long while, but a critical variable that enabled company success.
Today, Genuitec customers span the globe with companies and individual subscribers in every country. Our product line has expanded 10 folds since the humble beginning of a JSP debuggers in 2003.
Products awaiting launch in 2017 and 2018 are equally exciting as we push the boundaries for development and developers in all disciplines.
Genuitec remains self-funded without any outside investments.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Too many challenges. Covering every topic including financial, operational, sales and marketing, access, market dynamics changing daily and completion from every possible direction.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Genuitec – what should we know?
Genuitec is a Life Cycle management company best known for Application development and delivery. We compete and excel with the giants in the industry such as IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, RedHat and some areas with Google. We don’t try to compete on every aspect in our market, but focus on specific niches meeting the 80% rule. What we do, we do very well and are recognized as a leader in our market.
We are most proud of the fact that we treat our customers as best and as fairly as we want others to treat us. We carry this philosophy into all area of the business. We grow our staff and promote first from within.
We celebrate and reward success by everyone. We treat our customers and our employs as family. I know it sounds corny.
Rapid delivery is in our DNA. It set us apart from all in our space. As a small company with flat structure, teams can react to all opportunities to serve our customers and markets. As a small company with a significantly lower operational cost, we can deliver the same capabilities at the fraction of the cost our competition provides and pass on the savings directly to our customers.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Small, nimble, very strategic and never lost sight of the bottom line. We don’t have the luxury nor unlimited resources to prolong failing effort.
Fail fast is key in exploring opportunities and markets. No sacred cows other than keeping customers happy. No falling in love with a feature or a product.
Over the last 16 years, the company learned to be very streamlined and efficient in all aspect of company operations. But perhaps our biggest asset is growing a management team creating a multiplying effect well beyond the 90 years combines founders experience in the IT market.
Such knowledge is repeatedly passed down to all aspects of the company so that even the first year programmer knows that there is no such thing an only technical decision. Every decision is a business decision.
