Today we’d like to introduce you to Geoffrey Andrews.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Geoffrey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Back when I about 7 years old my older brother could always draw and I ask him how’d he get so good and he told me practice makes perfect! So every day after school, I would turn on shows like Dragon Ball Z or Yu-Gi-Oh and try and draw the characters from there. One day I was in art class and my teacher asked us to draw something that inspires us and at the time I was young and wanted to be Vegeta from DBZ the prince of all sayings, so I drew him.
My classmates were amazed at my drawing and started asking me for pictures and drawings so I used that as my practice. I then tried out at Stivers School of the Arts and realized there were a lot of talented individuals there some even more talented than me. I didn’t let that discourage me, it only motivated more to improve my skills. I focused on areas like my detailing and my color blending. While at Stivers, my teacher Ms. Karma had me enter art competitions like scholastics, governors, rock the block, congressional and young arts. After working on my talent for years I ventured out and started trying new things like graphic design and sculpture to bring my talents into a 3D world. I went to college at Wright State University and graduated with my BFA-Graphic Design. Wanting to use my skills to design for Nike and complete my dream.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growing up in a single household is never easy you need both parents to encourage you and root for you along the way or you will lack the confidence to just over those hurdles. That’s the confidence I lack and I struggled with being more confident about my work because I didn’t have that parent to be there to pat me on the back. I didn’t think that I was good enough to even continue to do it. But I jumped over this hurdle by having my friends with me throughout the way and watched my mom do her best and she made it to every event of mine. Seeing that gave me confidence, I didn’t need a pat on the back I just wanted support.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Well, now I do a lot of portraits and logo designs. I am very detailed in these two aspects so I guess you can call it my specialty. I am getting more into shoe design and painting morals on baby room walls or bedroom walls. I think I’m just an all-around individual and that is what sets me apart from everyone else. I’m not afraid to jump into something new.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have A LOT of support my wife and my mom competes for my #1 fan spot. My friends I grew up with at Stivers are still with me through life so they have seen it all. And the people I met on a day to day basis that I tell my story and dreams too. All of these people have been a huge help by never letting me settle and always going that extra mile.
