Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerhard Maale.
Gary Maale of Lonestar Mastiffs lives by his Go Big or Go Home mantra: he’s a former cave and shark diver who’s also spent time as a biologist on fishing vessels in the Bering Sea (think Deadliest Catch), raced high powered jet skis, and since returning to Texas has worked in the firearms industry in a number of capacities. He holds a Masters of Marine Resource Management and Bachelors degree focused in Marine Biology, and his work has been published in several peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Gary is a lifelong dog person who grew up with Doberman Pinschers, Airedale Terriers, and hunting line Labrador Retrievers – he grew up hunting all manner of the legal game across his native Texas with the working dogs his family kept. At 18, Gary acquired a Rottweiler, Nos, and a year later rescued his first mastiff, a Cane Corse named Nino – igniting his love mastiffs. Since that time, he has owned, rescued, or fostered most of the molosser breeds. Gary is a certified basic dog trainer for narcotics and explosives detection, tracking, and patrol – which involved working with and training hundreds of dogs. Gary owns Lone Star Mastiffs LLC, which breeds and trains working dogs, in Winnsboro, TX. Lone Star ships dogs worldwide and is proud of producing the best quality dogs representing each of their breeds. In addition, Gary runs a farm that produces a number of exotic animals and runs a rescue dedicated to mastiff and molosser breeds.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth or easy road. If it was easy everyone would be doing it. When I bought my property, it was just a piece of Texas jungle with a mobile home. The bushes were 14′ high right off of my porch and boars would walk up to my front door. I had to clear the entire property and put in fences myself with the help of friends because I could not afford to pay someone to do it. I designed and built a beautiful kennel last year, also with the help of a few other individuals. I had had dogs that died before they were able to reproduce. When Corona happened, I had a pregnant dog get stuck in a hanger in South Africa that miscarried. That was in March. I just got her into the United States a few weeks ago.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lone Star Mastiffs – what should we know?
I specialize in everything to do with Molosser and Mastiff breed dogs. I breed American Molossus, Central Asian Ovcharkas, Caucasian Ovcharkas, Armenian Gampr dogs, Boerboels and Presa Canario. I obedience train and board dogs as well. My training is unique because I am a certified trainer for narcotics and explosives detection, suspect apprehension, and tracking. I also teach people how to use dogs to hog hunt.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a fighter. For some reason, I do not have it in me to quit. I probably should have multiple times, but I have poured my blood, sweat, and soul into this endeavor and I will not see it fail.
