Today we’d like to introduce you to Gilda Ordonez.
Gilda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After hurricane Katrina, I had internally decided to take the loss as an opportunity to achieve all my dreams. My dance journey started 20 years ago with Arthur Murray Dance Studio. After years of dancing to the beat of someone’s drum and not too many opportunities to feed my entrepreneur spirit. I launched the first location in the Valley View Mall and it serves its purpose of teaching so much of what not to do in business. After three years, we moved to Design District. I fell in love with the area and the future of this exciting thriving community. I wanted to dream big and was always fascinated with all forms of art. I turned one business into two. One side of our studio teaches Ballroom dance and the other side teaches paint classes. We are an art center that provides two great concepts to the masses. The success comes from giving our customers superior customer service and being their biggest cheerleader.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been far from a smooth road. The challenges of having your own business comes with putting all your desires aside to do what’s best for the clients and the business. The biggest struggle was where our first studio was located and online seekers judging our capabilities on location verses experience and talent.
Please tell us about Design District Fine Arts Center.
Our dance studio specializes in ballroom, salsa, country western, swing and wedding dance lessons. Our paint class studio takes aspiring art students to attain their personal work of art within a few hours. We are most proud of our clients and staff. The study is set apart by the level of satisfaction from our clients. We take their needs seriously and will do whatever it takes to provide an encouraging and fun learning environment.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is going to city park with my sister and mom. We would get snowballs and just enjoy the simplicity of our world.
