Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Davis, National Geographic Image Collection Photographer.
Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
From 2000-2004 I had gone through one hell of a personal valley of darkness. On top of several handfuls of unmentionables, I was stuck at a desk job, clutching the end of the worn out old rope. I wasn’t a photographer. I decided to sell it all and set out. Without much more than a little hope and a desire to embrace the unknown, I grabbed a 5mp $400 Olympus digital point and shoot and headed out for one year around the world. Some call it fate, some call it luck, I think it was divine intervention. These were times before smartphones, before social media, times when you could truly get away from it all and be present. It started there, with a simple roll of the dice. ref: google Bono reads Bukowski’s ‘Roll the Dice’.
Has it been a smooth road?
For each of us, life is full of challenges. It really is about our attitude towards all of these unknowns. Unforeseeables will continually test us. It is our ultimate responsibility for how we choose to respond to these tests. Love and fear both inhabit the earth. In every moment, we are either acting in love, or we are acting in fear. There is no gray area. Try to be conscious of your response. There in lies the meaning for you. That’s really what I’ve been working on. My photography is just a reflection of that. Self awareness. Seeing the world as a reflection of myself.
Please tell us about your company.
This is where a PR company would do a much better job of this than me. Being a shameless self promoter has its benefits and I have been shameless in the past no doubt, but at the moment I’m not much into marketing myself so I’ll just say that I offer my photographic work as a collectible objects. It’s the only thing I’ve done to make a life for 14 years.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Dallas has some of the most interesting people and many have become Collectors of mine over the years. Least?? Um…tornados!
