Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Jones and Antuan Walker.
Greg and Antuan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
While serving in the military as a Navy Corpsman, I always had the inspiration and drove to start my own business. When I left the service, I started back in the workforce but found little satisfaction but a compelling drive to venture out and do something I loved. I was at a friend’s food truck when I decided to give one of my Navy brothers a call. When he picked up the phone he was in shock, he informed me that God instructed him that if I was to call, to bless me with his current food truck. Long story short that’s how I got started. I began to use the original waffle irons to test and develop the waffles I wanted to offer my customers. After about three months I had the perfect recipe. I invited the same friend who blessed me with his truck over in order to taste the waffles I came up with and one yelled out “What The….” Well, that’s how I came up with the name of the company. Another long-time friend, Antuan Walker, who was just as excited as I was about starting and running the business as I was joined me as my partner. He himself is a retired Marine and entrepreneur.
We joined forces and started working on new combinations of our waffles. Our customers were overwhelmed with what we came up with. Even though our journey started only a year ago in January of 2019, we both still have the love, joy and passion to do what we do every day in order to hear our customers say, “These waffles are the best I have ever tasted!” That’s when we came up with our current slogan, which is: They’re the best waffles you’ll ever taste, they’ll make your tongue slap your face! Fast forward to now our current truck, named “Big Blue,” operating on two military bases, Fort Sam Houston and Lackland Air Force Base and the surrounding San Antonio area.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a food truck business has had its challenges. There was a lot that we both had to learn, but we have endured. The biggest problem this far was not always having the revenue or the funding to combat some of the mechanical issues that come with having a food truck versus having a food trailer.
