Meet Greg Parish and Whitney Cheatham of The Popcorn Market

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Parish and Whitney Cheatham.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Greg and Whitney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are second & third generation popcorn artisans. My father the late great Robert L. Parish Jr started our company in 1983. It was originally called The Popcorn Factory. He along with my mother, master chef Norma Parish ran the family business and in 1986, they were selected to become concessionaires at The State Fair of Texas. In 2010 my sister the late great Dr. Tracy Tolbert and I took over operations at the fair and the gourmet popcorn business.

We took the company in a new direction by revamping the concession booths and adding popcorn bars to our menu. In 2016 we did an event at The Bomb Factory and I met the owner Whitney Barlow and we began selling our popcorn at their events. In 2017, we lost my sister Dr. Tolbert and my father Robert L Parish Jr and we took over operations at the State Fair of Texas and our business The Popcorn Market, which is run by me and my niece Whitney Cheatham and my nephews Michael & Malik Cheatham.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Trials and error. A lot of those. Dealing with the lost of loved ones, taking over an existing business and trying to keep the legacy alive that they left behind.

Please tell us about The Popcorn Market.
We have been in business for over 30 years. Our knowledge in the popcorn industry is our advantage. We make our custom flavors and we work with the top event planners in Dallas which gives us an advantage creative wise. We are getting ready to expand into the in-store retail market.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started working in the business right after school.

Always buy their popcorn when I go to the events at the bomb factory. Queso blanco is my favorite!
