Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Taylor.
Greg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been in Austin since 1995 and have always loved the city and its unique look. I always love to capture the uniqueness of what’s around me and it extends into my photography. I started with an old Kodak Easy Share I got my mom for her birthday and quickly fell in love with taking pictures, that evolved with the times to my smartphones (too many to count!) and eventually, I added Moment lenses to my mobile photography and learned how much further I could go with it so I got my Sony Alpha a6300 and do my absolute best to capture those special moments.
I have always had an interest in photography, at one point wanted to go to school for Radio/Television/Film but went the route of computers instead. I figured that 2020 would be a great year to finally jump into doing my own business and really seeing my skills shine under my own hand. Little did I know what 2020 had in store for all of us! Despite that, I’ve been doing a lot of growing and learning with this whole experience and I love getting sessions for everything from basic headshots to full-blown weddings! Making those life moments freeze in time, seeing something that sparks a feeling, remembering those wonderful times. That’s what I set out to do when I grab my camera.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has had its ups and downs! In the beginning, it was rough! Not knowing where to look, who to ask or even what to do! I just did what came naturally and all of a sudden, things started to click! No pun intended! This may sound funny but I love getting something that challenges me, makes me step back and wonder, “Can I do this?” knowing there’s a chance I may get flustered and nervous but when that happens, I usually produce my best work!
Please tell us about Taylored Eye Photography.
This was always something I wanted to do but never thought that I had the drive to do it. Run my own business? Be my own boss? I see things like that in pop up ads all the time but never thought I could do it! With the help of my lovely girlfriend, Tia, she helped me see things in a different light and gave me the push I needed to take that step and put my skills out there. She said, “If you think your that good, show ’em how good you are!” And I aim to do that on every one of my sessions.
One thing I specialize in is being me! And helping others be themselves too. It’s intimidating having someone point a high end, detailed camera at you. It makes you think of all your flaws and imperfections but I make sure to capture who you really are and not that made-up version that lives in your head. I love to make all of my sessions super personable. We always have conversations and get to know each other before we start the session. My clients always have fun and enjoy themselves when working with me!
What I’m most proud of is the fact that even during this crazy year, I’m doing great for just starting out and I think once things get back to normal, I’m gonna do even better!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite childhood memories is being outside with my friends, riding bikes around the neighborhood. Now I was always a big kid so while my little brother and friends were on BMX bikes with pegs and crazy colors, I was on a mountain bike! I kept up with them and even tried to do some tricks on that giant thing!
