Meet Haley Sun of Hey Lashes in Firewheel Mall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Sun.

Haley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I knew I wanted to get into the beauty industry the day I cut off my long hair in sixth grade to a shirt bob. That feeling of being able to change myself and to change how I felt about myself was so powerful, and I wanted every woman to share this with me. The years following as my hair got shorter and crazier, I entered high school where my friends would ask me for haircuts, crazy color dyes and the like or kitchen hair” as my Momma would call it!

Beauty school was where I felt like for the first time in my life, I had finally met my tribe of people. The family we make in the beauty industry with other artists, it’s something I still treasure to this day. After graduating, I tried many different paths of beauty. I quickly learned cutting/coloring hair wasn’t for me as I fell in love with styling when I got a job at The Dry Bar. Blowouts, braids and updos grabbed my attention in a way that I am still passionate about.

As I grew in m my career there was one thing I always wanted – to be a business owner. To be my own boss and to make my own rules. Being expendable in the beauty industry is something many of us face in our careers. And I was tired of being disposable, being taken advantage of, being told I couldn’t be my own boss because it was too hard. And you know how that goes – it only added fuel to my fire. Here I am now, almost two years into owning my lash extension business and I’ve never been happier in the choices I’ve made.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely au has faced struggle, the beauty industry can at times be a dog-eat-dog world even though there is so much love and support. I got pregnant with my daughter halfway through beauty school, and that was a big challenge in itself. The motivation to get up and going when you’re tired and hormonal, then people constantly telling you having a baby and starting a beauty career is near impossible and I wouldn’t make it a year with my license… It was rough. But I am blessed to have an amazing support system that always motivated me to keep going. Keep pushing. Keep striving. Reach for that goal and even if it takes blood, sweat and tears – you can’t give up. I have been an example for my daughter now, and I want her to know if her Momma can do it then she can too!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in volume lash extensions, a semi-permanent beauty service that allows my clients so much freedom and empowerment in their day-to-day lives. The moment I had my first set of lash extensions put on, that’s when I knew I had to be part of the movement! I take pride in the relationships I build with all my clients and also the standard of sanitation I consistently keep inside of my studio. My ladies know I will always greet them with a big smile, great conversation and a clean and safe environment to have their lashes done!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is an amazing place for the beauty industry, as many southern women love to look good because in turn it makes us feel good! My great-grandmother every Sunday would always go to the salon before church and have her hair set for the week. Lash extensions are the way many modern women feel put-together as our grandma’s did with having their hair set! Dallas is such an amazing city that is very diverse in culture, and I have met so many incredible women who love having their lashes done. If you have the right motivation and come into the industry with positive energy, clients will flock to you. It’s all about good vibes and great relationships – and Dallas is a wonderful place to be in beauty!
