Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Gorham.
Heather, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was 4 years old, and you asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up I would have answered “artist”. So I pretty much knew from day one what I wanted to do with my life. I studied art early at Booker T. Washington (Arts Magnet then) and have been lucky enough to be a working artist for the last 25 years showing work in galleries around the country.
For the last 15 years, I’ve been working as a digital sculptor as well, I have made all sorts of things from toys to crazy sculptural bundt pans but the main focus now is medical.
Working for MedCad, a custom surgical company here in Dallas, I create custom cranial implants using sculptural software that allows me to actually feel what I am working on. Being able to use my love of making things to actually help people in combination with making my own art is the best of both worlds.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like everything in life it has had its highs and lows, the experience of making art and the community it has allowed me to be part of has made up for any bumpy times. As far as struggles go, as anyone who has worked as an artist knows, not having a predictable or constant flow of income is something you learn to work with. You develop perseverance and some scrappiness, It can sometimes be daunting, but again, so worth it.
Heather Gorham, artist – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a self-employed artist and digital sculptor. The work I do for myself and the galleries I show in are both paintings and sculpture. The media I use in sculpture range from wood and bronze to digitally sculpted and 3D printed materials.
My favorite way to use the new digital mediums to combine it with traditional media like wood or bronze. I love making work that creates a world that feels comfortable and real to me. Going back and forth between painting and sculpture, choosing the medium most fitting to giving form to an idea, getting to use different artistic muscles in the creation of each new piece.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
That’s a toughie as far as singular moments go but I’ve had a lot of experiences that have been inspirational and meaningful and that have let me know I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.
