Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Hadnot-Williams aka Mz Blue.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Helen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Everyone knows me by my artist name Mz Blue. I started doing music and acting at a very early age, but it wasn’t until school-age years that I knew I had a niche for it. I was always auditioning for commercials and girl groups, anything where I could be seen on a larger platform. When I got out of high-school I went to college and took a few theatre art classes. I continued to perform at local talent shows and I was asked to perform at the college which was televised I thought that was cool. Around 2005 I got on an indie label called Sideways Records and I recorded an R&B Cd called “Eyez on Me” which only showcased me rapping on one track. We promoted the CD and I was able to perform at Scott Gertner’s Sky Bar for the NAACP award panelist.
After a year I went back solo and started recording another mixtape but this time showcasing my rapping skills. I put out a mixtape called (Fire Side) which caught the attention of (Houston Rapper) Slim Thug group Boss Hogg Outlawz. I came to the studio through an engineer that went by MixxMobb and started working on another mixtape. I am not new to the Houston Underground scene, I have gotten a chance to work with J-Dawg. While opening for artists such as K-Rino, Lil Flip, Pyrexx, Big Pokey, Lil Keke. I have won countless showcases one the legendary MC Wickett Crickett I will never forget one night I was the only female rapper competing, and the crowd voted for the guys. He told them there was no way I was leaving as hard as I went without a trophy, and he gave me one, R.I.P. Wickett Crickett. I have been awarded Best Female Rapper twice in my lifetime, so this is a major accomplishment for me. One award was out of L.A. and the other award was out of Dallas. I’ve appeared on local television stations and have accomplished so much in my career and I’m only getting better. On top of this, I pride myself on being a humanitarian and on countless occasions I have given back to the community by Fundraising and putting on local performances to help raise money for minorities. Recently I launched my hair company called (Bossy Diva Hair) and I have been working on branding my entertainment company (Take Flight) that I started a few years ago. I really have my hands full, but I truly believe my hard work is going to pay off.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I try to be transparent in my life so I will not pretend that this has been a smooth road. There have been many times where I questioned myself, the journey, the process. I think I retired from doing music for a whole year. I just got tired of some of the things I was going through. I felt like I was being blocked by certain individuals. I wasn’t getting the support that I needed and as an indie artist we look for support from friends and family and I wasn’t getting that. I was finding myself being taken advantage of by management and people acting like they could put me in a certain situation but morally it would be costing me in values. For a long time, I struggled with my image and everything that a woman could possibly deal with. I remember just going through a very dark period in my life and trusting to easily really set me back. But I am in a different place in my life where I question everything. I evaluate people in my life, and I promote and demote. I am stronger mentally and spiritually and it takes a lot to get me down. Even when I feel down, I pick myself back up because I must push forward as time waits for no one. I have work to do, things to accomplish, a story to tell, and a legacy to be remembered.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I started my hair company (Bossy Diva Hair) a few months ago and I sell Brazilian bundles, edge control and lashes. It is the best hair on the market and it’s affordable. I like that I have loyal customers that shop with me and tell me that they got compliments with my hair and they refer to other people. I am proud of my company because I am honest and do good business, I cannot say the same everywhere else. I treat my customers with respect and always throw in a gift of appreciation. What sets me apart is my customer service and my products are top of the line.
My entertainment company (Take Flight) was established over three years ago and I never did much with it. Now that I have more knowledge about running my own company, I am excited to have released my first single (Go Off) produced by Diggz on the entertainment company and it’s been a very big accomplishment. The single is being streamed on Spotify with over 5K streams, so I want to release a slew of singles in the future and get the brand out. As far as my entertainment company I am proud because it’s run by me and I am not following trends but doing what I love to do. I love the freedom and creative control that I have right now. What sets my entertainment company apart from others is I cater to every aspect of entertainment whereas most focus on one area. I focus on rap, singing, acting, anything that covers entertainment. I am not boxed in and I feel like I can reach more people this way, so it sets me apart from the others.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, I plan on having the money that I need to take both businesses to the next level. I would like to run a full business with a marketing team, promotion team, and sales team. For my hair company (Bossy Diva Hair) I want to open an actual store. With my entertainment company (Take Flight) I would like a publishing deal or distribution deal that comes with promo. This will help my music reach places that I can’t right now. It will also give me the creative control that I would like to have. Eventually, I would like to move out of Houston and maybe to L.A. just for a change of scenery and networking reasons.
