Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilda Morales.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for the beauty industry has always been part of my life. My mom went to cosmetology school when I was little and would use me as her model to do updos. It never crossed my mind to make it a career, especially since I became pregnant when I was in High school and my priority was to try and make money to support my son. After I graduated from High School I had a few jobs doing technical support as well as accounting and check cashing companies. Like they say, it would pay the bills but it was never my passion to wake up every morning to work at a 8-5 job to be stuck in a cubicle with someone after you all day long. I would always tell myself, there has to be something out there that makes me happy. It wasn’t until my dad passed away, my supporter, and I was laid off at the same time that I realized I had to do something with my life, for myself and my son. One day while I was laying down on my couch letting life passed by that I saw a cosmetology school commercial, it showed the freedom you could have doing what you love and the opportunity you have to make as much money as you want. All I remember hearing is Freedom and Money! I called and made an appointment. I remember walking to the school and feeling at home, an indescribable feeling, I was so excited to see how creative and passionate everyone was. I knew this was something I would want to do the rest of my life and would do whatever it took to make it happen. Right after I graduated I was scared to start working just anywhere, just because I had graduated didn’t mean I knew exactly what I was doing and was scared. A friend of mine told me about her hair stylist that was state board certified and how much knowledge she had and how she was looking for an assistant, even though I was terrified to call her and scared she would turn me away, I knew it would be my best decision and to my surprise she said yes and I became her assistant! I remember that for two years she only paid me enough to pay my car loan! But I didn’t care because I learned so much from her, even though I worked all day and late nights and weekends I knew it would all pay off. After that, she gave me my own chair and I also became an educator for a color company, we traveled a lot and learned so much! A few years later is when I decided that it was time for me to open my own salon and have my future established… I started on my own and a few months later I hired an assistant, who I trained to also be a hair colorist. My passion for hair color has increased and I have learned for your business to grow you have to teach your assistants to work like you as well. I now have four hair colorist that work just as good as I do. I have now been in the hair industry for over 13yrs and about to open my second hair salon!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Going to cosmetology school full time was very hard but not impossible. I still remember always being on a budget and holding back on spending any money. I remember the tips I would get from my clients would pay for my lunch and also going out was very limited. Especially since I didn’t have my father to help me financially or to motivate me like he used to and having a toddler to take care of. Also, after graduating from Cosmo School, it was so scary and hard to get into any good hair salon with no experience and not to mention building clientele and start making any more that was far from happening.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory were the times spent with my dad as a whole family. Even though he’s not here with us anymore I know he would be proud of who I become. He was also an entrepreneur and he’s priority was always to help his employees even if he didn’t have enough money left. I follow his footsteps and know that in order to succeed your employees have to as well. My priority is also to help my stylist and give them the future they deserve.
