Meet Hope Helms of Sons & Heirs Art Co. in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Helms.

Hope, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been a creative ever since the time I was little — the medium has just changed for me over the years. Previous to being an artist, I was a professional photographer and ran a successful business until my season of life changed and I realized my passion lay in creating things with my hands! Nearly 3 years ago now, I picked up a paintbrush and I just started researching and practicing until I had taught myself how to paint.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road! It has been one of the toughest things I’ve pursued. Everything takes me longer than usual because of not having prior knowledge of the art world or even how to paint. So, when I run into a problem, I have to stop and research and then practice until I can push through the obstacle and create what I want to create. Also, from a business perspective, it has been harder to figure out profitability with painting than it was in my photography business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sons & Heirs Art Co. – what should we know?
I started my art company, Sons & Heirs Art Co., originally as a way to raise money for our adoption through selling my art. Now that our adoption has been funded, I still utilize a portion of proceeds to fund other adoptions worldwide. I specialize in watercolor painting and botanical illustration. My work is set apart from many watercolor artists because I absolutely LOVE painting realism. I love pouring attention and detail into paintings.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband! He has cheered me on, taken interest in what I’m doing, takes the kids, so I can paint sometimes and helps me crunch numbers. Couldn’t do this without him!
