Meet Hui Lin of The Colony

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hui Lin.

Hi Hui, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
How I started as a florist is a strange tale. I stumbled into this profession by coincidence. My mom maintained an expansive garden that I grew up picking, cutting, and arranging the flowers. My love towards florals started with plants and in 2016, I started taking formal classes and workshops to learn. I spent a majority of 2016-2018 as a mentee. I love flowers so much and I love the joy it brings to others just by simply being there.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smoothest road, definitely not the road I envisioned, but it was smoother in comparison to others. I know others can have it tougher, so I try not to complain as much. The biggest struggle I have is getting my name out. I know my talent, my work, and my professionalism drew in some clients, but my inner insecurity of “not good enough” has been a roadblock I continue to work on.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a financier during the day and a creator at night. I specialize in creating experiences with flowers and other media to celebrate one’s life milestone. My work encompasses the person’s character, personalities, their guests, and family. I want to create a space that bring out the best in people and to bring people together- even if it’s for a brief moment in time. That is what set me apart from others.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The wedding industry continues to change, and I suspect 5-10 years from now, there will be smaller and smaller wedding celebrations. The trend isn’t to go big or go home. It’s gearing towards allowing certain amount of people into your intimate space to celebrate with you. This means there is a bigger opportunity for artists to hone their craft to continue creating art that is expressive and meaningful.
