Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Burse.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing video production in high school. I played Call of Duty games and decided to record and edit them. I eventually got pretty good at it and it carried on to life in college. I attended Grambling State University and learned a lot about video production. I graduated with a degree in Mass Communication and continued to work my job at KSLA News 12 in Shreveport.
Eventually, I realized that my dreams of being a successful director and cinematographer were going to be a lot harder than I previously thought. I reached out to a production company down the street from me and after six or seven months, I got a response. I was interning with them for some time until I wasn’t needed. While there, I created my own business. I started by doing a video for Fraze Siareno, an amazing artist in Louisiana. From there, I started doing music videos for artist in Louisiana. It was hard to build in Shreveport, LA as the production company I worked with made most of the videos in that area. I left Shreveport and moved to the Dallas area.
In the area, I did a lot of groundwork. I linked up with Tahjá, an awesome artist and entrepreneur. I did a lot of networking and collaborating in order to build my name in the area. After creating a portfolio that I can be proud of, I started charging for everything (unless I came across a great opportunity). I had a lot of ups and downs, but I am still pushing today. Scaling a business can be a lot of tough work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Currently, I do Short films, Music Videos, and Fashion videos.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a rough road. I have had to grow as a business owner and I have faced many challenges in these three years. A lot of people treat video production as a hobby and not a business. Doing so makes it very difficult to make sales as a company. If I don’t land clients, I can’t succeed and pay the people I hire for various tasks.
Also, it is hard to get paid my worth. Video production takes a lot of time. I’d have to go through pre-production, production, and post-production usually on my own. In the beginning stages, that is usually how it will be.
Also, when I was doing it full-time, it was stressful to go month by month wondering where the money would come from. Our gear cost hundreds and thousands of dollars. Free or low budget work will not be able to do anything for creatives long-term.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in cinematic video production. I am a director, editor, and cinematographer. I am known for my behind the scenes work and my cinematic fashion pieces.
I am proud about the quick success of the company. I have had some great opportunities in the past. I look forward to future.
My style of shooting is my own. I have had inspiration to build my style, but I have slowly set it apart. Eventually, I want people to know who shot the videos without looking at the credits.
What were you like growing up?
I was an animated kid growing up. I was smart but did not like applying myself in all situations. I was interested in video games and cartoons mostly.
I was a lot more outgoing and friendly to everyone.
