Today we’d like to introduce you to Indu Sanka.
Indu, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in India. I am an electrical engineer. I have done coding during the early years of my career. I have done IT consulting for multinational companies. I have lived in Boston for 6 years. I am the valedictorian of my MBA class at SMU. I do business analytics consulting for Southwest Airlines. I am certified in Six Sigma and Lean way of running business operations.
I agree that is it kind of an unique background and it might sound like I was all over the place. The thing that was common among all the places I have been is my constant urge to do more, learn more and my exploration to find a place that will push me to give more of myself. It is the same urge that triggered me to leave my 12 years of promising corporate career and start running my own company. I have acquired First Signs in November of 2017.
Sign industry is so fragmented, scattered and made up of so many individual players because of the extremely custom nature of the products and services we sell. There is a lot of scope for standardization within the industry, tons of room for streamlining and organizing processes and operations. What that means is many areas of improvement in terms of the service the customers are currently receiving. It is that opportunity to make things better that drove me towards this industry.
I call myself a continuous improvement freak. Even since I came on board to First Signs, we have been implementing new process controls, project management and CRM systems to offer a better customer experience and faster turnarounds on orders to our customers.
My passion throughout my career has always been helping my clients succeed. I am very well situated here to continue to pursue my passion. I take pride in my service oriented, customer-centric way of running a business. We at First Signs, greatly care about the visual identity we are generating to the customer’s brand and consider our customers’ success our greatest testimonial.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t believe that there would be any smooth roads to success. Every piece of your accomplishment needs to be earned through hard work and persistence. What keeps you moving is the positive energy you can derive by believing in your dreams. I might have more struggles in front of me than what I have crossed so far. But “Miracles start to happen when you give as much energy to your dreams as you do to your fears!!” a quote by Richard Wilkins that I try to live by everyday.

We are a professional sign company with more than 10 years of history in serving different businesses in DFW Metroplex. We are a team of 8, including me, with a combined industry experience of 100 years. With our consistently reliable customer service, we have earned some prestigious clientele around DFW. Our customers include some major real estate companies, fitness studios, medical clinics, restaurant chains and other franchises and business with multiple locations, who have been trusting us for their sign needs and vehicle graphics for their fleet, for years. We design, manufacture and install graphics based marketing products including, all kinds of banners, flyers, window graphics, wall graphics, floor graphics, vehicle graphics and a variety of interior and exterior signs. We provide our customers the convenience of one stop shop for all their sign needs.
We are not just a sign vendor but a trusted partner to our customers. We take the signs responsibility off of our customers’ shoulder and make their sign procurement process so effortless, so our customers can focus on value added activities for your business. My team is trained to own the process from the time we learn that one of our customers’ have a need to until the products are delivered right, in time and they are happy with them. Our customers know that their needs would be take care of with just one phone call/email. They know that we got their back however challenging their product might be. I am very proud of my team’s can do attitude.
We care about our customer’s brand almost as much as they do. Having myself associated with two of the esteemed brands in Dallas, Southwest and SMU, I totally understand the brand value. We understand that we are not just working on the customer’s signs but on their visual branding. We will not accept less than a great look on any of our customer’s signs. That is why a lot our name brand customers trust us even for their out of the state locations because they know that their brand is safe in our hands.
We care about our customers’ business and brand almost as much as they do. Having been associated myself with two of the most preeminent brands in town SMU and Southwest, I completely understand the importance brand value. We won’t let any of our customers’ signs or banners to have less than a best look on them. We always treat them as ours. Our customers choose to work with us even for their out of the state locations because they know that their brand is safe with us.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in a middle class family in India. My parents have raised me and my younger brother to have a lot of confidence in ourselves. I was always very clear on my decisions even as a toddler, there were never hesitations and looking backs. I was the top performer in every grade including my MBA program at SMU Cox. My classmates always remember me as the smartest kid in the class, the math genius, Ms. Analytical brain. I used to love solving puzzles and riddles, the harder the more fun!
