Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaiah Wilson.
Isaiah, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2016 I was a finance major at the University of North Texas and my best friend/roommate was brainstorming ways to make some extra money outside of our jobs. After hours of conversation, he brought up the flavored pickle. We grew up with flavored pickles as kids and would get them from local black-owned barbecue spots or some kid at school would randomly bring some from time to time. I really ran with the idea, and after a few weeks of trial and error and many wasted pickles, I finally created a winning recipe that brought joy to my taste buds that I remembered from my childhood. From there, I started delivering door-to-door all over the city of Denton. Demand became so high I had to get a website so I built one in three days! I drove as far as Fort-Worth and Longview just to deliver my pickles. Today I have a retail store/production facility under renovation that will be utilized to grow my business and my brand.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have failed a lot! In the earlier days of my business, I struggled with trying to manage it alongside my other commitments in academics, at work, and other organizations I had a vested interest in. However, I always make a point to fail forward and though I have completely stopped operations three times for various time periods, I have always found my way back to making my pickles.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Pickle Plug – what should we know?
The Pickle Plug is a boutique snack company that specializes in flavored pickles. We are best known for our pickles and the various flavors we come up with and produce. Our recipe and process of creating separate us from other brands and we strive to challenge our customer’s taste buds. We are most proud of the many exciting reviews we receive from our customers, they keep us going and growing. Are you plugged in?
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My ability to connect with people and enact joy has been key to my success. In my line of work, I view customers as assets and to best maintain those assets I work to build meaningful relationships.
