Meet Jace Maxwell of Zen Yoga Roanoke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jace Maxwell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jace. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I discovered Yoga in the early 1990’s while in college. One of my roommates found a book by Richard Hittleman, called “28 Days to Hatha Yoga”. We had been taking meditation classes together and were on a path of self-discovery; we agreed to give Yoga a try. From that point on, I was hooked on Yoga. I started practicing on my own and even created a home practice space. Yoga helped me realize I needed to work on the inside if I wanted to be healthy and happy on the outside.

I had a child in 2007 and soon realized how hard it was to have a mindful practice with a small child at home, so I decided it was time to take my practice away from the house. I started going to a real yoga studio not far from my home. After practicing for over 20 years with audio tapes and CD’s, it was like a new experience going to a class with a live teacher and other students. I totally loved it! I had no idea how much you get from the energy that builds when practicing Yoga with a group. Once my son was old enough for pre-k, I signed up for a 200 hour YTT and completed the program in 2013. I taught for a year then completed an additional 300 hours of training along with special certification to teach Children’s Yoga.

I started teaching at a Yoga studio as soon as I finished my first level of training. I wasn’t sure where I was going with this whole being a Yoga teacher. I had just left the workforce to become a stay at home mom. The yoga teaching gig was intended to be an outlet not to become a full time career. Today, I look back at my previous experiences in mortgage banking, commercial banking, customer service, and retail jobs all were preparing me for where I am at today as a business owner.

I had no idea how rewarding being a Yoga teacher would be. It’s truly a wonderful thing to watch your students leave with a smile on their faces and a bounce in their step. As much as I enjoyed teaching, there was a part of me that wanted to do more. So, I purchased Studio Samadhi (Roanoke location) in Jan 2015. I ran the studio under that name until March 2019, when I re-branded to Zen Yoga Roanoke. Yoga has truly transformed my life. As my little Yoga community continues to grow, I only hope to help others along their journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with every small business, there have been plenty of challenges, but I feel like everything just fell into place for me. The opportunity came at a perfect time in my life. My son was in school, so I had more time to focus on getting back to work, owning a studio seemed like a perfect way to keep my schedule flexible and move forward with a career in the Yoga industry. The hardest part was believing I could do it. My logical mind said the numbers didn’t work, but I just knew I had to try. In the beginning, there were times when I struggled to make payroll or rent, but over time the participation has increased, I have added Yoga Teacher Training and all kinds of workshops that helped to grow our community.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
