Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Oppel.
Jack, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was drawn to home building because one is able to see and touch the result of one’s efforts. Very early in my career I learned how emotionally powerful home ownership can be to people. I had just finished presenting a finished home to a buyer. He was a rough and tumble US Marine veteran…. tattoos and all. I walk into the family room and noticed he had become quiet and then I realized he was crying. I was alarmed and asked what was wrong. He responded that it was a great day and that he was the first person in his family to own his own home. It was a great day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been fortunate. Increased government bureaucracy and the housing market collapse in 2008 are the two toughest struggles we have faced. I am blessed with both excellent employees and wise partners that have made it possible for the company to overcome setbacks.
Bud Bartley Homes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We produce true, from scratch, custom homes. So many builders claim to be a custom builder because they let you move a wall and pick your colors. True custom building requires us to really know our customers and we are good at that.
I am proud that we only deal in truth and therefore do not have to remember what we story we told. We are guided by the golden rule of do unto others as you have them do unto you.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Time and the means for myself and our employees’ family and friends.
When I was young, my success marker was to have a boat big enough to make the draw bridge go up……hahaha. I don’t necessarily feel that way anymore.
