Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Poirot.
Jackie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career in the health care field as a pharmacist. While being a pharmacist was fulfilling in many ways, I was concerned with how little interaction I had with my customers. There was no time to educate the patient on what else could be done to improve their health. Every month was the same, watching the patients get progressively worse and fill more expensive prescriptions was disappointing.
I moved with my children to Paris, France and started a wellness practice there that I still maintain today. When I returned to Texas, I wasn’t sure if people would be open to a more preventive and holistic methodology, since most healthcare in the USA typically emphasizes reactive approaches to illness rather than proactive strategies. This was 2005. It was at that time my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I realized if he was going to have a long healthy life that it would take more than just the traditional way of treating diabetes to achieve it.
I opened my Functional Medicine practice in Dallas and never looked back. I decided to continue my education and received a Masters in Wellness with a focus on nutrition. I also became Board Certified in Anti-aging and Regenerative Medicine. I have Fellowship in Anti-Aging and Metabolic and Functional Medicine. It was my own family’s need for a better healthcare model that firmly placed me on my current path.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Functional Medicine was not a widely recognized field when I opened my practice in the US. Healthcare and insurance are costly and it was expected that if you got sick, insurance should cover it. It has become apparent with the changing healthcare system, that what insurance will pay for does not always cover the treatments you need or enough to keep you well. The focus has changed from treating illness to keeping illness at bay and longevity and good lasting brain function is what we are all searching for.
Poirot Pharmacy Services was among the first in offering individualized concierge services to our patients. It took some time to build a practice. Patients had to see that receiving good quality care that focused on the patient’s goals and health problems along with strong planning for how to stay well was worth paying for. Now that we have a strong reputation, we rely totally on word of mouth. Happy and healthy clients are our only form of advertisement.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have a Functional Medicine Practice. We have clients that are looking to partner to explore options for improving their longevity, health and quality of life. We are proactive in addressing health concerns through genetic testing, family and personal history and work closely with our clients to make changes that are easy to incorporate into a busy life.
Another important part of my practice is that I specialize in helping individuals that are facing chronic unresolved health conditions. Patients that have been through the healthcare system and not found the answers to chronic health conditions can come to us and receive personalized care. I treat the entire patient. I approach health as if it were a puzzle and by studying the “pieces” I can find solutions for chronic health problems. I have helped patients with weight loss, hormone balancing, and auto-immune disorders such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriasis, Autoimmune Thyroiditis and Type 1 Diabetes.
Through our nutrition program, we have helped patients become pregnant after years of unsuccessful IVF treatments. We can help uncover the foods that are keeping a patient inflamed that prevent successful weight loss. We can tailor a lifestyle program that addresses inflammation and patients feel better than they have in years.
What sets us apart from others is we do not give up on you. We are part of your team.
What were you like growing up?
I was born in the UK and moved to the United States with my parents and my siblings. My first job in high school was for an independent pharmacy. I loved the field of pharmacy. The science, complexity, and helping people get well was soon a passion for me. I loved science and being part of the field of medicine meant seeing how giving patients medications could relieve their pain and create wellness soon became a career goal. I was passionate and driven.
