Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Padilla.
Jacqueline, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I don’t even know where to begin but I’ll make it as short as possible. I first started in the Fashion Industry I graduated with Fashion Marketing and Visual Merchandising Degree. I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do in fashion. I was one of the first group of board members for the Fashionistas, from there went to working Visuals at the Market Center then to doing a sold-out brunch at the Crescent I put the fashion show there all together and realized how much I love it and how good I was with it. From there I worked and volunteered at as many events and all throughout Dallas. So I continued to do shows for many designers.
Now.. I have to fast forward a little bit because there is so much I’m constantly in movement and always willing to try new things. So I caught the eye of a very well known Wedding Designer in Dallas that worked mostly in Indian Weddings. So she reached out to me and said how much she loved how I worked and wanted me to work with her, at that time I was doing good and really needed to think if I wanted that change and when I changed and took that leap of faith, it changed my life completely. So much I learned so much I went through and every day I was a new person with new challenges. So from there I need change I was ready for something else, at first I was going to go on my own but I said no I’m not ready yet, I didn’t want to get ahead of myself.
So out of the blue a coworker at the time told me another designer was hiring. So I decided to check it out, I walked into their showroom and it was nothing compared to where I was at. During the interview, I told him to give me 3 months and I will change his showroom around. I needed the opportunity to take control and that is exactly what I did I changed his business completely very successful. After, I set my goal I knew it was time to fly. I didn’t know exactly where to start but I knew I had to be now and today. So I set a date May 29, 2016, which is also my daughters birthday. I finished all the weddings I had with the other company and I took another leap of faith. I told the owner of the company I was at a month before and needless to say he wasn’t happy I was leaving.
I reminded him that 29th, “Tomorrow I go live” with my own company and I had nothing but a Facebook and Instagram page and name My Designer along with a drive and a dream and I did it. I had no idea where my next check was coming from or nothing but I did know I will not fail I will not give up or break. So literally 3 days after I got a call from a planner and a week after boom I had my first wedding, then my second and literally have not stopped since. I have been blessed I never thought I would be as busy as I was I literally had a destination wedding in Baton Rouge 4 months after. I knew it was right and every day I’m still learning I’m still hungry I still have that drive to get better to grow and to be the best version of me and my company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d be lying if I said it was, so many obstacles that I faced that no one could tell you about or explain, it’s those experience that you have to learn on your own. There so much into growing a business is how much work you put into it I live it I breathe it my life revolves around it. During weekends there I nights I didn’t sleep for over days seems like and my crew was amazing they hung in there without them I could have never gotten to where I am today each wedding has a story to tell any designer could tell you that.
When I worked with the other companies I would tell myself I’ll do this different Ill do that differently but weddings and events are a whole other animal. Nothing is set it stone brides changes, things break, it rains, it snows, the close. I mean the issues can be endless but no matter what, it always works out on the outside, it’s smooth sailing but on the other its another story. That is where my adrenaline kicks in my brain starts working I go into a zone and forget about it. Ill climb the highest tree whatever it takes to get it done.
Last year, I can defiantly say was a full learning year for me and at the same time, I could not stop to take it all in. Until I realized changes needed to be made and fast. I had to restructure my whole business with all I learned and I’m taking that with me now and so far the wrinkles are coming it’s becoming smoother every day. Its needed challenges are need to grow and it’s important that it happens in the beginning because it takes you to the point to ask yourself if you really want this and if you do then you keep going and going to stop but always breath. Balance and Boundaries.
Please tell us about My Designer.
I’m a wedding/event designer, nobody ever pays attention they say wedding planner, I’m like no event designer. I am a certified wedding planner as well but I focus design. I specialize in florals and design. I help my clients create their vision of life.
I’m so proud of myself nothing like that feeling of achieving something you wanted and doing something you love. I’m so proud to see how much it has grown the feeling is unexplainable. I will be in business 2 years this May. Seeing everything my team, my family and I went through to get where I am today is truly a blessing.
There is so much more. This year is change and the only place from here is up. What sets me apart is me, my style, my relationship with my bride. Yes, this is a business but this is their wedding after that day their life changes and I’m able to be a part of that. Now, that I have a better grip you and my brides and clients will see the differences on what makes me different. I try to create fresh and unique ideas as much as my bride allows me.
I’m more of a Boutique style wedding I want a more intimate feeling when creating my bride’s wedding with all the stresses that come along with weddings I want to make this part as peaceful and enjoyable as possible and of course beautiful. I want them to remember their day. One thing I truly love is working with flowers it gives me a wonderful feeling, I love working with my hands and watching it all come together. I normally do my florals while everyone is asleep, I don’t get calls, emails I don’t have to worry about anything. I turn on my music and I just flow. I love it.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have so many but one is when my mother used to work at hotels, she worked at some beautiful ones I remember going to work with her. I would walk around the whole hotel and everyone there knew me so I would get the wonderful food. There were times when I was tired I would be able to sleep in one of the rooms order room services. I just loved to see how they would change the hotels around I saw so many wonderful things.
I saw the backside to the front and now I get to work in them most of the time. Crazy how life works you always go back. Like, my first job was when I was 15 I was excited to turn 15 because I got to apply for a job and it was Mc Donald’s yep I sure did and proud but I worked my way up to be in charge of doing the birthday parties, I got a key to unlock the supples and decor for the parties and I got to set them up and now look. This is where I tell you it’s crazy how you always go back everything in life is for a reason.
